Maryam’s Struggles
Maryam was a young girl who lived with her stepmother, Gwaggo Ladi. She had lost her mother at a young age, and her father had abandoned her. Left in the care of Gwaggo Ladi, she grew up facing hardship, forced to work tirelessly from morning till night.
Every day, Maryam woke up before dawn to prepare food, fetch water, and clean the house. Despite all her efforts, Gwaggo Ladi never showed her kindness. Instead, she constantly insulted and beat her over small mistakes. Maryam longed for an education, but Gwaggo Ladi refused to let her attend school, forcing her to work as a street food seller instead.
A Kind Friend
Maryam’s only source of comfort was her best friend, Saleema. Saleema always encouraged her and reminded her that better days would come. She often sneaked books to Maryam, who would secretly read them at night, hoping to educate herself despite Gwaggo Ladi’s restrictions.
A Cruel Decision
One day, Gwaggo Ladi made a shocking announcement. She had decided to send Maryam away to work as a housemaid for a wealthy family. Maryam pleaded with her not to send her away, but her cries fell on deaf ears. Desperate, she ran to Saleema’s house, seeking help from her mother, Umma. Umma consoled her and advised her to be patient, assuring her that Allah had a better plan for her.
A New Life in the City
Maryam was taken to a large mansion in the city, where she was introduced to Hajiya, her new employer. Hajiya appeared kind at first, but soon, Maryam realized she was expected to work day and night without rest. She was treated like a servant, given little food, and denied any freedom.
However, Hajiya’s son, Mustapha, was different. He noticed Maryam’s hard work and began treating her with kindness. Unlike the others, he spoke to her with respect and even encouraged her to learn whenever she had free time. Slowly, Maryam started to believe that maybe life in the city wasn’t entirely hopeless.
A Ray of Hope
One day, Mustapha caught his mother treating Maryam harshly and decided to step in. He spoke up for her and demanded that she be treated better. Surprised by her son’s concern, Hajiya agreed to make things easier for Maryam. She was allowed to rest more and was even given time to study.
Maryam’s heart filled with hope. Though life was still difficult, she knew that she had found a small light in the darkness. She promised herself that she would never give up on her dreams.
