ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

She was running—without looking back, without any sign of slowing down—only the heavy sound of her breathing filled the air. From the way she ran, anyone could tell she was not in her right senses.
The sky had turned dark with heavy clouds, and rain had already begun to fall lightly. Because of this, the roads were almost empty as people had rushed home to avoid the rain.
It seemed she was the only one on the road; nothing could be heard except the sound of her breath.
Suddenly, she stopped. The heavy rain made it hard for her to see the road ahead. She staggered like someone drunk. Finally, she collapsed and fell to the ground. The rain poured directly over her entire body.
It didn’t even seem like she had fainted, because she kept moving one of her hands—the one that appeared to be injured.
“Brother, look over there… doesn’t that look like a person?” said a young girl who was inside a car with her brother. It seemed they had parked because of the heavy rain.
He looked in the direction Amina pointed. He stayed silent, watching the young girl lying on the ground as the rain continued to fall on her, with no sign that she would get up.
He tried to drive off, but Amina said: “Brother, I told you it’s a person lying there, and you’re trying to leave?”
“Amina, what can we do for her in this kind of rain? What kind of help can we offer? We’re not even from this town.”
“We can take her to a hospital here, Brother. Let’s drop her there and then continue our journey.”
He looked at her seriously and said: “Amina, wallahi, I’m not going anywhere for this. She might even be a mad woman. No sane person would lie down on the road in the rain like this.”
After saying that, he started the car as the rain began to reduce.
“No, Brother! Look, she’s raising her hand. Wallahi, from what I see, she’s asking for help. Please let’s stop and at least talk to her or hear her problem,” Amina insisted.
Abba stopped the car and looked at Amina. “Go and check her. Say whatever you want to say to her—I’m not going anywhere.”
Amina got down from the car and walked slowly, like someone afraid of being grabbed. She finally reached where the young girl was lying.
With fear, Amina said: “My sister, are you okay? Why are you lying here?”
Suddenly, the girl jumped up like someone possessed and grabbed Amina, saying: “Please help me! Please help me!”
Amina paused and looked at her closely. As far as she could tell, there were no signs of madness—only fear and distress.
Taking a deep breath, Amina said: “I will help you. Tell me, what do you want me to help you with?”
But the girl kept repeating only one thing: “Help me… please help me.”
Amina held her hand, and they both walked toward her brother’s car. But before they reached it, the girl suddenly pulled her hand away and ran straight into the car, whose door had been left open when Amina stepped out with an umbrella.
Both Amina and her brother watched her in shock. One look at the girl and you could tell she was not in her right state of mind.
Abba looked at her and asked: “Who are you? What’s wrong with you?”
Instead of answering, she stared at him. Then suddenly, she burst into tears, raising her hands and saying: “I killed him! I killed him!! I killed him!!! Look at my hands!”
She finished speaking while showing them her clean palms.
Abba looked at Amina and said: “Amina, you see what you’ve brought upon us now? You better find a way to get her out of my car.”
Amina sighed and looked at the girl, who kept repeating: “I killed him… look at my hands.”
Amina opened her handbag, took out some money, and handed it to her. “My friend, take this money and go buy something to eat, okay?”
But instead of taking the money, the girl shook her head and cried even more intensely, repeating: “I killed him.”
She kept showing them her hands, though they saw nothing unusual on them.
With courage, Amina asked: “Who did you kill?”
Instead of answering, she cried again and repeated: “I killed him.”
Amina shook her head and looked at her brother. “Brother Abba, what are we going to do with her? From the way she is, she doesn’t seem to be in her right senses.”
