A Visit Filled with Expectations
It was 7pm on Friday evening. Ayrah sat on a small chair in front of her dressing mirror, holding a small phone in her hand. A soft smile danced on her pretty, fair face. Her mother peeked into the room, lifting the curtain.
“Ayrah, are you still waiting for Abba?” she asked.
With a sweet, dimpled smile, Ayrah replied softly, “Yes, Umma.”
Umma scoffed. “You’ll wait in vain...” she muttered, dropping the curtain and leaving.
About ten minutes later, Ayrah heard her father’s voice greeting from the compound. She quickly dropped her phone, rose, and exited the room. Under the glow of the moonlight and lantern, her beauty was illuminated: around 19, tall, fair, with large expressive eyes and delicate features. She wore a long black gown, no headscarf, just the drape of her gown covering her hair.
“Abba, welcome back...” she greeted.
“Ayrah, my dear,” he smiled, sitting. “Come, tell me how your studies are going. Looks like you have something to say.”
Ayrah smiled excitedly. “Abba, I’ve been waiting for you to share wonderful news!”
Umma interjected with a smirk, “She refused to tell me earlier—said she’d wait for you.”
Abba nodded at Ayrah. “We’re listening. I pray it’s good news.”
Still smiling brightly, Ayrah said, “Abba, I met RAJ!”
They both looked confused.
“Raj! My Raj, remember?” she explained, hopeful.
They exchanged looks. Abba closed his eyes for a moment.
“His father should come see us then,” she added quickly.
Umma, concerned by Abba’s silence, asked, “Are you okay?”
With a heavy tone, Abba asked, “You mean Raj, the son of Kabeeru...?”
“Yes, Abba! That’s him!”
But suddenly, Abba raised his hand to silence her. His eyes grew red with emotion. He spoke with a voice filled with finality:
“Never mention that name or his family in my presence again.”
Ayrah was stunned. She looked at both parents, confused.
“Abba… did you already give me to someone? I’m only saying Raj should come ask for my hand.”
“Ayrah, leave now before I lose control,” he warned.
Her tears began to fall as she struggled to understand. “Abba, it’s Raj… the same Raj you know. Why are you saying this?”
Abba clenched his eyes in visible pain. “As long as I’m alive, you’ll never marry Suraj.”
The words hit her like a slap. She tried to process them, but before she could speak, he added:
“Bring anyone else in the city, but never think I’ll let you marry Raj—or anyone from his family.”
She broke into sobs, dragging herself to his feet, clutching them desperately.
“Abba, please… I love Raj. This might be the only favor I’ll ever ask of you. Please grant me this one.”
He pulled his legs away, visibly shaken. His chest heaved as though in pain. Then he turned and walked away.
“Abba, I can’t live without Raj. Please say something…”
But he only said coldly: “Even if you die, you’ll never marry Raj.” And with that, he left.
A Daughter’s Tears, A Lover’s Worry
As Umma stood to follow Abba, Ayrah cried out again:
“Umma, don’t leave me in the dark. What did Raj do wrong? Umma, please explain to Abba!”
But Umma walked away without a word.
Left alone, Ayrah cried until she was exhausted. Eventually, she dragged herself back into her room, tears still streaming. She picked up her phone and dialed a number.
Meanwhile, far away, Raj stepped out of the bathroom, drying his feet. He entered his room, styled his clean, scented hair, and admired his reflection in the mirror. Just as he was relaxing, his phone rang. He picked up and was startled to hear sobbing.
“Subhanallah… Ayrah, what’s wrong?”
She cried uncontrollably. He sat up in alarm.
“Please stop crying. Talk to me—what happened?”
“It’s Abba...” she choked out.
“What about him?”
“He said I can’t marry you. Raj, what did you do to Abba?”
Raj froze. “Me? What did I do...?”
“I trust you, Raj. Just send your father to speak to Abba. Maybe he doesn’t know which Raj I’m talking about.”
He sat down heavily. “Alright. In Sha Allah, I’ll handle it. Please stop crying. I’m yours—and you’re mine, okay?”
She nodded silently. Then softly said, “Yes...”
“Smile for me.”
She wiped her tears and smiled faintly into the phone.
“That’s my girl. Now rest. I’ll talk to Abbu. I love you.”
“Tohm...” she whispered.
Raj Makes a Move
Raj changed into a smart blue outfit, skipped the cap, and headed downstairs. Just then, his mother—beautiful in her mid-40s—entered with dishes from the kitchen.
“Come eat first, then let’s chat.”
Raj smiled. “Sure, Ummee… but I have something important to discuss.”
She noticed his seriousness. “I knew from your face you have something to say.”
They both entered the large, tastefully decorated parlor. Just then, Alhaji Kabeer entered, greeting warmly.
“Welcome back, Abbu.”
“Thank you, Raj.”
“Should I serve your food now?” Ummee asked.
“No, just bring juice first,” he replied.
She brought it over and sat beside them. Then Raj said, “Abbu, I came with good news.”
“Oh? Let’s hear it.”
“Abbu… I want to marry someone.”
Alhaji Kabeer’s face grew curious. “That’s interesting. Who’s the girl?”
Raj looked between his parents, nervous but hopeful, then said softly:
“Her name is Ayrah...”
