The Distracted Gentleman
He couldn’t take his charming eyes off a young lady trying to board a tricycle.
Salif was speaking to him, but the handsome man’s mind was far away, fixed somewhere else entirely.
Salif followed his gaze to see what had captured his attention so deeply, but he didn’t see the lady’s face — she had already gone. He only caught a glimpse of her back, dressed in a white shining fabric that glittered in the sunlight.
As they walked on, the handsome man released a deep sigh that even Salif could hear.
Salif teased, “So, this is the ‘work’ you’ve been busy with? Now that you’re back to your senses, can we discuss the business, or are you still staring?”
Their friend Nawar laughed and said, “Our guy has fallen in broad daylight! Too bad I didn’t see the face of the lady who just stole the heart of our ‘hero’.”
Since earlier, he hadn’t spoken a word — he was lost in thought about the young woman. Finally, he exhaled and, in his smooth voice, said,
“You people talk too much. I’m heading to the office; we’ll discuss the matter there.”
Without waiting for their response, he entered his car and drove away.
They laughed it off, though they had been meeting to talk about a missing company worker. Clearly, that lady had completely distracted their friend.
Salif muttered, “I just hope she isn’t a spirit, because I didn’t even see her face, and he doesn’t know any girl from this area.”
Nawar replied, “Whatever it is, time will tell. I’m heading home too; we’ll talk later.”
“Alright, greet your wife and the boy,” said Salif.
“They’ll hear; see you soon,” Nawar replied with a smile.
Who Is Zayyan?
Zayyan was a young man blessed with wealth, education, good looks, and pride.
He was the son of Alhaji Bashir Wada, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s petrol and gas industry — a man both wealthy and wise.
Alhaji Bashir had one wife and four children — two boys and two girls. Zayyan was the eldest, around thirty years old, and still unmarried despite his parents’ constant reminders. His response was always that he was waiting for the right time. His parents never stopped praying for him to settle down soon.
His sister Nawal was married to his close friend Nawar, and they had a son named Affan, after Nawar’s father. His brother Mannir was a soldier serving abroad, while the youngest, Ihsan, was still in nursery three, barely four years old.
The Wada household was one of discipline and respect. Despite their wealth, the children were humble and well-mannered, thanks to their mother, Hajiya Ameena, a virtuous woman who raised them with love and values.
(Indeed, when children are well-mannered, their mother deserves the praise — and when you look deeper, you’ll find that her own parents raised her with the same values. May Allah bless our parents and increase us in knowledge.)
Zayyan’s Character and Career
Zayyan was strikingly handsome — so much that even daughters of wealthy families subtly tried to attract his attention.
Yet he ignored them all. Even at work, wherever he went, women admired him, but he never gave them a chance to get close.
Despite his father’s riches, he pursued education on his own and became a specialist eye doctor (ophthalmologist). He excelled in his field so much that he became well-known across the country.
