ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

She was sitting on the stool in front of the mirror, applying Body Shop lotion. When she was finished, she picked up her humra and kulacca body perfumes and rubbed them on her skin, then selected a silky, purple nightgown and put it on. She sprayed her hair with ORS Argan Oil hairspray, tied it up with a ribbon, and put on a hair bonnet. After spritzing on some Sandra perfume from the Al-Rehab collection, she wrapped a wrapper over her nightwear, put on a hijab, grabbed her phone, and left the room, pulling the door shut behind her.
Right in the corridor leading to her husband's room, she bumped into Ummi, who was coming out of their father's parlor. Ummi looked her up and down, let out a loud hiss, and said, "Look at this betrayer, all dressed up and heading to the old man's room. This is how you'll end up—always forcing yourself where you're not respected, and you will never get what you came here for. As long as we are here, you won't even get a drop of water to drink in this house. You truly have no sense of gratitude. Out of all the men to marry, you couldn't find anyone else but Daddy? Mami's husband? In case you've forgotten, let me remind you." She shoved past her and walked away, leaving her standing there frozen like a statue.
She stood there for over five minutes after Ummi left, unable to move. With great effort, she dragged her heavy feet and proceeded to Daddy’s room. She gently pushed the door open and offered a greeting of peace (Sallama), which he answered from inside. He was sitting on the bed, looking through some documents.
"Welcome back and rest well, Daddy," she said to him after folding the hijab and wrapper she had worn over her nightgown—because it was his strict rule that whenever she was in his room, he did not want to see her bundled up in a hijab.
"Is there anything you need before I go to sleep?" she asked him, even though he hadn't acknowledged her initial greeting. For a moment, it seemed like he wouldn't answer, but then he finally said, "I want black tea."
