YAR GARUWA (The Most Heart-Touching Story)
By Hawwa M.U (Smasher)
At the Gate
She kept greeting from the entrance of the house, yet not even a cough of reply was heard, under the scorching sun that beat harshly upon her head.
With nothing else to do but shift from side to side, and seeing she wasn’t answered, she lifted her veil and set it on her head to shield herself from the tormenting sun.
After a while, she repeated her greetings — still, silence.
This forced her to squat down, take off her slippers, and sit upon them like a student waiting for a lesson.
From afar, an elderly man approached. Watching her carefully, he quickened his steps to confirm his suspicion.
Coming close, he exclaimed:
“Nana Khadijatu, my daughter! What are you doing out here in this burning sun when everyone else flees from it?”
Lifting her head quickly at the sound of her father’s voice, she smiled with relief and replied:
“Abba, I came home and greeted, but no one answered me. That’s why I stayed here, not knowing whether anyone was home.”
Her father frowned:
“But my dear, why would you sit out here under this sun, as if someone forced you to? Stand up immediately, let’s go inside. Don’t you ever sit here again, lest you fall sick.”
Holding her hand, he led her into the house.
Inside the House
At the entrance, her father greeted aloud. Hearing no reply, he pushed further inside, repeating the greeting.
To his surprise, in the middle of the courtyard sat a woman. Disbelief crossed his face as he asked:
“Ladiyo! So you were here all along while we were greeting, yet you couldn’t answer?”
Her face twisted sour like spoiled stew as she retorted:
“I heard you — so what? Was I assigned here to sit and reply your greetings?”
Not wanting to be disgraced in front of his daughter, he cut the matter short with,
“Allah make it easy.”
But Ladiyo sneered:
“Easy? Worse will come.”
He said nothing more, just shook his head and entered his room.
Khubra’s Silent Pain
All this happened before Khubra, who stood quietly, head bowed, tears trickling from her eyes.
Seeing her father walk away, she too turned to leave.
But Ladiyo’s voice halted her — cursing words hurled like stones. Trembling, she hurried into her room, heart pounding violently.
She found a corner and sat down in silence, like a stranger lost in an unfamiliar place. Alone with her thoughts, sleep finally claimed her.
A Dream Vision
She found herself in a breathtakingly beautiful place. Excited, she hurried forward, but no matter how fast she tried, she couldn’t reach it. Exhaustion overcame her, forcing her to sit and gaze at the distant splendor, searching for water she could not find.
Turning back, she saw the endless straight path she had come from — no beginning, no end. Overwhelmed, she lowered her head and wept bitterly.
Suddenly, from afar came the noise of people and a sweet fragrance in the air. Raising her head, she saw a caravan approaching.
She ran towards them, pleading:
“Please, help me!”
But none stopped. They circled around her and moved on.
Desperate, she rushed ahead of them again, repeating her plea. This time, angered, some shouted at her harshly. Terrified, she trembled as a large man advanced with a whip raised to strike.
Before the whip fell, a gentle but commanding voice rang out:
“Do not dare harm her!”
The man turned quickly — and froze. Trembling like a leaf, he stepped aside.
A handsome young man emerged, dressed in pure white garments, walking with dignity.
The big man bowed, stammering:
“Forgive me, my lord, I repent!”
The stranger raised his hand in dismissal and, without another word, turned to leave.
The Stranger
Startled, Khubra followed, calling:
“Servant of Allah, wait! Please stop!”
But no matter how she tried, she could not catch up with him. He walked as if carried by the wind. Soon, he grew distant until she lost sight of him completely.
Frustrated, she sat in tears. She didn’t even know his name — the one who had saved her life.
Yet she smiled faintly, whispering to herself:
“Surely, we will meet again… if not here, then in another dream.”
Back to Reality
Meanwhile, back at home, Ladiyo sat outside muttering. Annoyed that Khubra hadn’t answered her call, she stormed into the girl’s room.
There, she found her asleep on the thin mat. Rage boiled in her. With a shake of her head, she hissed:
“So you ignore me, little girl?”
She grabbed a large clay pot of water and poured it over Khubra as she slept.
Harsh Awakening
Khubra sprang up in shock, drenched, the room flooded with water. Looking around, she saw everything soaked — her clothes, her belongings, the floor.
When she looked at Ladiyo, the woman only glared at her with hatred.
As Khubra bent to gather her things, Ladiyo slapped her hard across the face. Stunned, Khubra froze, unsure whether to cry or remain silent.
When she tried to leave, Ladiyo cursed:
“Where do you think you’re going? You’ll fetch water before I deal with you! You think you’re a queen to come and sleep while work awaits?”
Terrified, Khubra grabbed her pot and hurried out to the stream, shame burning her as wet clothes clung to her body.
Hardship
She fetched water, returned, and labored all day with endless chores. By evening, exhaustion nearly broke her, but at last she finished.
Only then did she bathe, perform ablution, and pray quietly in her room.
Lying down, she thought again of her dream — of the young man in white.
Smiling faintly, she whispered to herself:
“Even if I never see him in real life… maybe in dreams, Allah will let me meet him again.”
