Farouk's Frozen Shock
Farouk stood frozen, unable to even move a finger, as the emotional weight of the moment overwhelmed him. His heart ached from the touch of Ummu’s hand and Nurein’s calmness. Gently, Ummu opened her eyes and focused on Nurein’s face, unaware that she was awake.
Taking a deep breath, she whispered, “Yah Nurein.”
He raised his reddened eyes, filled with worry. Forcing a soft smile, he caressed her face.
“How are you feeling now? Are you okay, Ummu?”
She nodded with a faint smile.
“Yah Nurein… Where’s Beenerfa?”
Beenerfa’s Confession
Beenerfa slowly approached the bed, walking as if her skull had cracked from inside. She stood by Ummu’s side, eyes filled with guilt.
“How are you, Ummu? Yah Farouk...” her voice broke into sobs. “I’m very sorry for what I did. Please forgive me, Ummu.”
Turning to Mom Salma, she added, “Momy, please forgive me too. It’s not that I hated Ummu—I was angry because she beat me to first position in class. That was the reason I acted out, not because I truly hated her. I love her, Momy. And now, because of me, her heart is breaking... I’m the cause of all this.”
A Family Secret Revealed
Mom Salma rushed to embrace Beenerfa, comforting her gently. With tearful eyes, Beenerfa continued,
“Momy, I’m sorry for almost destroying the life of the child you carried and gave birth to. Ummu is your daughter.”
Gasps of shock spread through the room. Nurein and Farouk were stunned. Farouk knew Beenerfa wasn’t Momy’s biological child—but he didn’t know Ummu was. Mom Zeena and Daddy were equally shaken.
Ummu, unable to grasp it all, felt her head spinning.
“What are you saying, Beenerfa? This can’t be true…”
Beenerfa knelt beside her and said,
“You’re Momy’s real daughter. My father wronged you—he took away your happiness and caused your pain. At first, I didn’t know. That’s why I hated you so much.”
The Day Everything Changed
“Do you know when I found out you were Momy’s child?” Beenerfa asked, wiping her face.
“It was the day Daddy took you shopping. I overheard everything after you both left. That day changed my heart. I swore to myself you’d get justice. Daddy told you the truth: they are your parents. And that meant... they were mine too.”
Falling into tears, she cried out,
“Why did my father do this to me?”
Mom Zeena rushed to hold her, but Beenerfa gently pushed her aside and moved closer to Ummu, wiping her tears.
“You’re not sick, Ummu. I’m only telling you this because I admire your kindness. You’re just like your mother. And I… I acted like my father. That’s why Nurein always stood by you—he loved you without knowing why. It's the love of shared blood.”
Unspoken Love, Unseen Sacrifice
“Remember the first day we had breakfast together? I didn’t wake up early like I always do… none of you questioned it,” Beenerfa continued.
“You never reacted to my insults. Momy never treated me any differently. She always loved me like her own. She never let me feel like an outsider.”
Suddenly, Ummu broke into heavy sobs.
“Who told you you’re not Momy’s child? You are. You love her, and I love my own mother. Please, let’s not bring more pain. Let’s just stop here before my mom also suffers from this.”
“But I heard it from Daddy himself,” Beenerfa replied. “Momy and Daddy are your real parents. Yah Farouk—whom I always claimed as my brother—is your husband. Please, Ummu, forgive me. Everyone has their fate, and this is mine. What you see of me now is who I truly am.”
Healing and Acceptance
Beenerfa paused and continued,
“Even when I claimed our house cook was better just to insult you at school, it was because I wanted you to hit back at least once. But you never did. Momy always shared a bed with me. Even when you were around, she didn’t separate us.”
Farouk quickly reached her, placing his hand over her mouth and hugging her tightly. Silent sobs echoed in the room for nearly five minutes. He took her hand, and they left the room together. Momy burst into tears again, moved by the tragedy and the truth.
Truth Touched Every Heart
Beenerfa was right—Ummu was full of grace. She never knew Daddy had told her the truth. She lived as a servant, never claiming her right. Nurein hugged Momy and said softly,
“Mom, I know you’re hurt, but Ummu never disrespected you. She stayed in her place. Farouk... he’s at the root of all this.”
Suddenly, Nurse Hajja entered.
“Please, she doesn’t need emotional stress. Her heart can’t handle it. One shock could be fatal.”
“Okay, Nurse. We’ll leave her to rest,” said Alhaji Ahmad Shuwa, leaving with Daddy.
Nurein followed quietly. Mom Zeena walked up to Ummu, giving her a sympathetic smile. Ummu looked at Mom Salma, who quickly turned away, unable to look at her daughter as a mother should. Ummu closed her eyes, trying to sleep.
“She wants to rest,” said Hajiya Zeenatu as she adjusted her pillows.
Aftermath: Beenerfa’s Pain
In Beenerfa’s bedroom, she was still crying. Her eyes refused to stop. Farouk gently comforted her.
“You haven’t eaten, Beener. What do you want? I’ll get it for you.”
She shook her head.
“No, Yah Farouk. I don’t want anything. I just want you, Daddy, and Momy. I don’t want to lose any of you.”
Farouk tried to hide his tears, but they flowed anyway.
“We won’t lose you, Beener. You know I love you, right?”
She nodded.
“Then we’re in this together,” he said.
“I want to sleep now,” she whispered. “The doctor said Ummu will be discharged today…”
