ABOUT THIS BOOK
Description
She was a young girl, barely thirteen years old, huddled against the wall in the dark of the night, shivering intensely from the cold. Before she knew it, the sky opened up and rain began to pour down heavily. Hurriedly, she retreated into the entrance hall (zaure) of the house and found a spot to huddle further. Even though the roof of the hall was leaking, she sat there anyway, quietly shedding tears.
The rain continued to torrentially downpour on the town. With great effort, she slid down to the floor, lay down, and continued to shake violently from the freezing cold. Eventually, exhaustion took over, and sleep drifted her away.
The next thing she heard were the echoing calls for the Dawn (Asuba) prayer. She gently adjusted her sleeping position, as she had only just managed to fall into a deep sleep. But before she could even settle properly, she felt a sharp kick. Even without being told, she knew it was Baffa. She quickly bolted upright, scratching her body, and stared up at Baffa who was standing over her, blinding her with a flashlight.
"Damn you! You can hear the call to prayer and you won't get up? What kind of animal are you? Are you going to get up, or do I have to smack you?"
She scrambled to her feet and rushed inside the main house, still frantically scratching herself.
She spotted Mama by the well drawing water, so she rushed over and grabbed the bucket rope.
"Mama, let me pull it for you."
Mama gave a weak smile.
"No, Sultana, leave it. Go grab the kettle so I can pour some water for you to perform your ablution."
Without any argument, she fetched the kettle and walked back to the well. Just then, Hafsatu emerged from their bedroom, scratching her head. As she looked up, she spotted Mama pouring water into Sultana's kettle.
"Unbelievable, Sultana! Of all the sheer nerve—is Mama your servant now? To the point that she is drawing water and pouring it into a kettle for you?!"
Instantly, Sultana's body began to tremble, because she knew Hafsatu's nature all too well. Right now, she was trapped, and she knew a brutal beating was coming her way.
