ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

There was no one in the courtyard, since it was morning and the harmattan breeze was very strong.
A young lady was sitting beside the water pump, with a huge pile of laundry next to her, washing clothes. One look at her and you could tell she was exhausted from lack of sleep. Judging by the way her face was drawn and tense, there was no sign of cheerfulness.
An elderly woman came out of one of the rooms. She picked up the kettle in the courtyard, apparently heading to the bathroom. She passed in front of the young lady without even noticing her. As she came back and was about to pass again, that was when she noticed someone was there.
She began calling her name in surprise.
“Maryam! Maryam...”
Slowly, Maryam opened her large white eyes and fixed them on the elderly woman.
“Maryam, get up. You know if everyone in this house comes out and finds you haven’t finished this work, you surely know what will follow.”
She quickly got to her feet, trying to steady herself because she was feeling very dizzy.
With pity, the elderly woman looked at her and said,
“Could it be that you haven’t eaten anything?”
Maryam only nodded to mean yes. The old woman shook her head, feeling a fresh wave of sympathy for her, then said,
“Finish the work and come to my room so you can eat, alright?”
Again, she nodded and began trying to continue the washing with determination. By the time she finished, no one else had come out, and that pleased her very much. In a hurry, she headed toward the old woman’s room.
She had not gone far before she heard a loud voice, the kind that would unsettle any stranger who was not used to it. Even though she was used to hearing it, it still filled her with fear and anxiety.
“Where are you going?”
A woman who had stepped out of one of the rooms asked, fixing her small eyes on her.
“Um... Aunty said I should come—”
The woman shot her a harsh look. She did not let her finish, but cut her off, saying,
“What would that old woman do for you?”
Maryam fell silent and lowered her head. The woman barked at her again,
“Am I not talking to you?”
Her body trembling, she began to speak. Her fear had risen to the highest level.
“I’m sorry, Mamma. I swear by Allah, I’m hungry. I was only going to eat. My insides feel like they are about to come out.”
The woman stared at her in shock, then with disdain twisting her lips, she said,
“And who exactly is going to do the sweeping and the rest of the chores for you?”
“I will do them, In sha Allah. I swear I’m very hungry.”
“When you finish the work, then you can go. As long as you haven’t finished, if you step into any room in this house, by Allah the Almighty, death will be kinder to you than I will...”
With that, she turned and went back into her room, fuming as if she would explode from anger.
As soon as she entered the room, she began waking up her children who were wrapped up in blankets. She started spanking them, because none of them had even prayed the dawn prayer, and she was fully aware of it.
