Description

An Unexpected Discovery

Arshaad had just completed an assignment and informed Granpa using the landline before heading back to his office for a crucial discussion with Aslam. To his surprise, the office door was ajar. Upon entering, he found the room empty—no sign of Aslam. That raised two suspicions in his mind: had Aslam left in a hurry? Or had someone else entered the office after him?

Searching for his phone to call Aslam, Arshaad realized it wasn't in his pocket. Just as he was about to head back and search, he spotted it on his desk. When he picked it up, he noticed dozens of missed calls—all from Huda. Alarmed, he quickly read her message and froze. His heart raced, his mind clouded with fear. Without wasting time, he tried calling Aslam, but there was no response. He then called Huda.

With a tear-filled voice, Huda answered, informing him that Aslam had arrived, and they were already on the way to the hospital with Anty Maryam. Arshaad grabbed his car keys and sped off, praying for Maryam’s safety.

At the Hospital

At the hospital, Aslam took charge. He ensured Maryam was wheeled in and admitted, then gently asked Huda to calm down and sit. Despite his efforts, Huda's tears wouldn’t stop. It wasn’t just Maryam’s condition—it was also the cruelty she experienced from Hajiya Shuwa earlier that day. That emotional weight broke her.

Aslam, avoiding eye contact with Huda, stole glances her way, visibly disturbed by her pain. A nurse even urged him to go sit beside “his wife,” mistakenly thinking Huda was his spouse due to his concern. Internally, Aslam was overwhelmed by emotion. Her sobs were affecting him more than he liked to admit.

Trying to distract himself, he observed her features closely and was struck by how much she resembled Abba. The resemblance to Anty Maryam was uncanny. He was still processing this thought when Arshaad arrived, equally worried and agitated. Aslam didn’t even notice his approach until Arshaad tapped him.

Without preamble, Aslam blurted out, “Have you ever seen Huda’s mother?” Arshaad, puzzled, confirmed. Then came the shocker—Aslam declared, “Huda is our sister. She’s Abba’s daughter.” Arshaad, stunned, asked how. Before Aslam could explain, Abba walked in.

Secrets Unraveled

Abba, noticing Huda’s resemblance to him, was visibly shaken. He walked up to her instinctively, his heart pounding. Huda, still unaware of the storm swirling around her, greeted him politely.

Aslam wasted no time. He requested that Abba follow him so he could show him Maryam and confirm everything for himself. Huda and Arshaad joined them. They arrived at the emergency ward, anxious and silent. When the doctor finally came out, he confirmed Maryam was stable but warned them not to stress her due to high blood pressure.

Inside, the reunion was heavy. Maryam recognized Abba instantly. Eighteen years may have passed, but some bonds leave permanent imprints. She struggled to contain her emotions. The room was thick with tension, especially after she slapped Abba in fury. Her pain erupted—how could he abandon Huda? Her tears fell as she screamed, “We don’t need you!”

Abba was too stunned to respond. Maryam accused him of denying Huda her rights and vanishing from their lives. Though he tried to defend himself, claiming he had no idea she even had a child, she wouldn’t listen.

Truth and Consequences

When a nurse finally forced everyone to leave the ward, Abba couldn’t keep still. Aslam confronted Maryam angrily, blaming her for hiding Huda all these years. Arshaad tried to calm him, asking him to respect her, but the situation had escalated.

Then, in a powerful moment, Maryam pulled a letter from her purse and tossed it to Aslam. He caught it and read. The letter was proof—perhaps something from the past Abba had written unknowingly. Mama wept. “You can take me to court,” she said, “but I’ll take you to God’s court. That’s where justice lies.”

Abba read the letter and claimed he never wrote it. He admitted that years ago, he was given an ultimatum: either leave Maryam forever or see her and her family jailed. He took the safer path, unaware she was pregnant.

Maryam, her voice breaking, replied, “I don’t care about us anymore. The one you wronged is Huda. She never deserved this silence.”

Aslam, unable to take it anymore, shouted that if she didn’t stop acting stubbornly, he would sue her himself. Maryam didn’t flinch. “Do what you must,” she said.

She then handed Huda her purse to fetch a folded document. Another letter. After reading it, Aslam was dumbfounded. Maryam repeated: “You have power over me in court, but I will answer before God.” Her cries filled the room.

Abba, holding the document, whispered with grief that he didn’t remember writing it. But he now realized he had to face the truth. Huda, still processing everything, stood silently.

When the doctor returned, frustrated by the noise, he gave them Maryam’s discharge papers. She stood, ready to leave. Huda followed her, still stunned. Abba broke down and hugged his daughter tightly, crying like a child. The pain, the years, the absence—it all came crashing down.
