ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

A Quiet Return
Ummi smiled warmly and went to meet her, gently pulling her into an embrace and stroking her shoulder.
“My daughter, the journey must have been tiring for you to come out so early. You should have slept and rested until eleven before coming for breakfast,” she said kindly.
With deep embarrassment, her voice trembling and eyes filling with tears of shame, she replied softly,
“Ummi, good morning.”
Ummi held her hand and led her into the living room, sensing the slight quiver in her voice.
Samira laughed cheerfully. “Aunty, go and sleep. Rest today.”
Her mother smiled, returned Fariyda’s greeting, and led Samira into the kitchen.
Goggo Dada quickly entered the living room and sat beside Fariyda, greeting her warmly.
“Alhamdulillah, Fariyda. How was the journey?”
Fariyda kept her head lowered, wishing the ground would swallow her. What could she say—when she returned, who brought her back, and why? The questions filled her with even more shame.
Ummi brought tea on a tray and set it on the center table.
“Come, drink some tea and then go back to sleep,” she said.
Fariyda shook her head gently. “Alhamdulillah, Ummi. Let’s go to the kitchen.”
Mahmoud’s Arrival
After prayer, Mahmoud headed inside. As she entered the living room, he walked through the corridor and didn’t see her. He went straight to his bedroom and even checked the bathroom, but she wasn’t there. He hurried to her room—still nothing. Standing in the living room, he looked around in confusion.
“My Angel… did you run away?” he murmured before heading downstairs.
As he opened Ummi’s living-room door, Salim and Sulaiman were just entering the corridor. They followed him inside.
The moment Mahmoud’s eyes landed on her, he released a heavy breath of relief. He sat on a chair facing her, his gaze fixed on her.
They all exchanged greetings. Fariyda kept her head lowered, answering softly.
Sulaiman joked lightly, “Madam, good morning. How was the journey? Though you people never really get tired, do you?”
“Alhamdulillah,” she replied quietly.
Salim glanced at Mahmoud. “You went and threw away my wife, then brought yours back. And this useless Sulaiman—I told him to bring her here, but he dropped her at Baba Malam’s house instead,” he teased.
Sulaiman scoffed playfully, while Mahmoud continued staring at Fariyda with emotion in his eyes.
A Request for Mercy
Sulaiman suddenly spoke to Ummi, “Please talk to Mahmoud and tell him to release Sa’ad and Faisal. I’ve tried everything since Taraba. I thought he went to Abuja to close the case and free them, but instead he ordered they be kept. Their parents are suffering. I especially feel for Sa’ad’s mother.”
Ummi looked at Mahmoud seriously.
“Mahmoud, release them for the sake of their parents. Whatever they did, you gave them the opportunity. You have no solid reason to keep them detained.”
He replied stubbornly, “They were arrested with evidence. Searching for someone’s wife is serious. They should stay in custody.”
Salim added, “They’ve learned their lesson. Let them go.”
Mahmoud hesitated, then said firmly, “They may not stay long, but they’ll spend some time in custody.”
Ummi and Goggo Dada exchanged looks—they knew once he decided something, he rarely changed his mind. Ummi handed Fariyda a cup of tea.
Almost everyone watched as she spoke softly, tears in her eyes.
“Please, Appiy… let them be released. I swear I never spoke with them directly. They only had Yah Amin’s number, and even then they spoke with you. Please, for the sake of their parents. Sa’ad’s mother might fall into hardship because of this.”
Tears threatened to fall. Mahmoud shook his head quickly and moved closer, sitting on the arm of her chair.
“Don’t cry. If you want them released, they’ll be released. But if I see your tears fall, I won’t free them,” he said gently.
She blinked rapidly, holding back her tears.
“See, they haven’t fallen. Please release them—for their parents’ sake.”
Everyone stared in shock. Mahmoud, who never took orders from anyone, was now yielding to her words.
He took out his phone, made a short call, and hung up. Leaning toward her, he said softly,
“It’s done. They’ll be granted bail this morning.”
She exhaled in relief.
“You’re happy I did what you wanted?” he asked, reaching to touch her chin.
Embarrassed, she quickly stood and headed toward the kitchen. “Yes… thank you.”
Ummi and Goggo Dada exchanged astonished looks. Mahmoud—who never listened to anyone—had just obeyed her without argument.
Sulaiman lowered his head, understanding that her presence alone had softened him.
Salim stared in disbelief.
“Subhanallah… is this really you, Mahmoud? Or did Yah Amin’s heart get placed inside you?”
Mahmoud only frowned slightly and sat where she had been sitting, silent but changed.
