ABOUT THIS BOOK
Description
He entered the house without offering a greeting and immediately kicked a basin he saw lying at the edge of the courtyard. Boiling with rage, he began shouting,
“Useless work! Complete nonsense! So now you have the audacity to misbehave in my own house? I will humiliate you today! Aysher, where are you? Do you think I am a fool? I am speaking, yet you remain inside as though I am an idiot. God, please bless me with wealth so I will no longer endure humiliation from this woman! Will you come out, or must I enter the room and beat you in front of those children you are so obsessed with?”
She hurried out, stumbling as she came.
“Please forgive me, Abban Aslam. I swear, Afra was trying to sleep, so I was soothing her. I wanted her to fall asleep so I could finish my work.”
He hissed loudly before replying, foam gathering at the corners of his mouth.
“Listen to this nonsense! Whenever anyone speaks to you, your excuse is always the children. All you care about are those children. Get out of my sight! I only pray for the day I will finally be free from this burden. Because I have no money, you now treat me like a useless fool, don’t you?”
“Please forgive me, Abban Aslam. That is not true. Forgive me if I have upset you,” she said, turning to return to her room.
He grabbed her and slapped her hard across the face.
“So you think I am a fool? I am still talking, yet you turn around and leave me. Was I speaking to the air?”
Holding her cheek, she replied through her tears,
“Please forgive me, Abban Aslam. You told me to leave, so I turned to go. But now you say I have offended you. Please tell me what wrong I have done to deserve this punishment. For God’s sake, we married each other for love. Neither of us was forced into this marriage, yet we have not enjoyed even a full year of peace together.”
“Hmm! Are you questioning me? I said, are you questioning me? What progress have I made since I married you? None at all! I keep moving backwards every day. All my friends are now richer and more successful than I am. I truly married a woman who brings bad luck. Who still marries for love nowadays? What matters now is marrying for money.
“Listen carefully. I have already asked people to find me another wife. I will marry for wealth this time—the daughter of a rich family. Then we shall see. Foolish woman!”
After saying this, he stormed out of the house.
She returned to her room, sat down and rested her chin in her palms.
What has come over Abban Aslam? Why did he suddenly change towards me? I am not responsible for our poverty. Could I truly be the one bringing him bad luck? Only God knows.
After finishing her work, she cleaned the entire house until it was spotless. She lit a cheap stick of incense. She had once again used some of the money her elder brother, Nasiru, had given her two days earlier when she visited home to buy food for the family.
She cooked macaroni with potatoes, bought a single fish, fried it and added it to the meal.
When she had finished, she swept the house and wiped every surface until everywhere was perfectly clean. She then took a bath and dressed neatly, applying only light makeup.
Aysher was truly beautiful. Even without makeup, no one looking at her would believe that she had already given birth to two children.
