ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

"RABI'A! I know that after I die, you will return to your father's house... ADAWIYYA, I am certain that once you return to live among your relatives, you will suffer. I know that you will face all kinds of hardships in life. I know that Habiba does not like me, let alone my children. I know she will never let you have peace... But hold on to prayer; hold on to prayer no matter what situation you find yourself in. Be patient, because I know that your trials have only just begun. Now, YOUR STORY begins..."
The sound of water overflowing from the bucket she had placed under the tap pulled her back from the world of thoughts she had drifted into.
She raised her head slightly to look up at the sky. The darkness of dawn still lingered, and the weather was quite hot, as they were in the middle of the last ten days of Ramadan, with barely four days left until Sallah.
She lowered her gaze to the bucket, which was so full that water was spilling over. Just as she knelt down to pull the bucket away, a voice barked at her, shouting:
"What on earth are you doing, Rabi?! The bucket has been full and overflowing for ages, yet you won't take it away! Is it because of the wicked attitude you inherited from your mother, huh? Well, just keep standing there! If the sound of this splashing water wakes my children, I swear I will deal with you severely!"
Rabi raised her head and looked at where the woman was standing. The electric light illuminating the courtyard clearly revealed the woman's face. It was her stepmother, Habiba—the woman whose constant desire was to see her life ruined.
And she didn't stop there; she would even send her off to Abuja to work as a housemaid. Rabi had been in this house for five years now. After her mother passed away, her father had gone all the way to her mother's hometown to bring her to his house—a house she could only describe as a prison. For not even a single second had she ever felt any happiness living there.
There was no one she enjoyed being around in the house except Saratu, Habiba’s second daughter, who would sometimes even intervene and speak up for her whenever Habiba was scolding her.
