ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

Right from the front gate, I collided with three large, loaded truck-like vehicles piled high with belongings. I slipped past them and entered the house. Indeed, evacuation has become a reality, I said to myself, eyeing every corner of the house.
I saw Asma'u coming out, pulling two suitcases by hand. Umar, who was leaning against his car tapping on his phone, looked up at her. He gave a slight smirk and averted his gaze, thinking to himself, "A girl who is like someone without physical strength? Everything about her is so soft and fragile..."
Her voice interrupted his thoughts as she said, "Yaya, here they are."
Without saying anything, he put his phone down on top of the car, opened the trunk for her so she could put the suitcases inside, closed it, picked up his phone again, opened the car door, and got in.
Asma'u stood there, continuously looking around the house with her eyes. Deep down, her heart felt heavy and uneasy. She knew that Yaya Umar was only putting on a brave face because he was a strong, resilient, and patient man. It was extremely rare to ever see upset emotions plastered on Umar's face; he was someone skilled at hiding his inner secrets...
Seeing that she hadn't gotten in yet, he honked at her.
Quickly, she opened the car door, but instead of getting in immediately, she leaned down slightly and asked, "Yaya Faruk, what about Anty Lubna?"
He let out a small hiss and said, "She left a while ago. You're wasting my time."
With a heavy body, she got into the car, and he drove out of the house. His heart felt hot and pained, but he kept murmuring Innalillahi wa'inna'ilaihirraji'un (Surely we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return).
He drove slowly, as if he didn't want to. Neither of them could speak. Every now and then, she would wipe away tears, and he would watch her out of the corner of his eye.
He parked in front of a modest, medium-sized house. Without needing to be told, this was clearly the house they were moving into, because we found the large truck vehicles there busy offloading luggage and carrying them inside the house.
He glanced at her briefly. "Go inside. Hasiya, Rafi'a, and Fatee are all there; they will help you arrange your things. Let me go somewhere."
"Okay, may Allah protect you. Safe return."
"Amen," he uttered under his lips.
She opened the door and got out. She had barely started walking away when she turned back: "Yaya Faruk, what about your bags?"
He didn't reply until he started the ignition. "Go ahead; when I return, I'll bring them inside. I'm in a hurry right now." He spoke without even looking in her direction.
