ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

A Plea That Fell on Deaf Ears
“Whatever you do to another man’s daughter will one day be done to your own daughter. Please, Alhaji, have mercy and do not harm me,” pleaded a young woman of about twenty years, tears streaming from her eyes. Before her stood a pot-bellied Alhaji, fair-skinned, his stomach protruding proudly.
He smiled, his beard shifting slightly, and rubbed his large belly that stretched from his waist to his chest. “Ameera, how many times must I tell you—Alhaji Mudi does not understand begging at all. Please stop; when you do this, it stirs something inside me,” he said as he moved closer.
She quickly stepped back, wiping her tears. “Please forgive me, I swear my mother will kill me,” she cried. He smiled again and pushed her onto the thick mattress spread on the floor. She struggled to get up, but he pinned her down with his heavy body. “Shuuut, my baby. There’s no way your mother will know unless you tell her yourself.”
Struggling to breathe under his weight, Ameera pleaded, “Please, Alhaji, let me go. What if someone comes in and sees us like this?” He licked her neck and said, “I locked the door. No one will see us. Just stay calm; I’ll take care of you.” As he spoke, he unzipped her dress from below, having already removed her hijab.
The Weight of Silence and Pain
She shut her eyes tightly as hot tears rolled down her cheeks—tears of bitterness, pain, and agony as Alhaji toyed with the most precious part of her body. Like an overexcited old man, he pressed his mouth against her chest, behaving like a child tasting something new. She swallowed a lump of sorrow before forcing out the words, “Alhaji, remember—you only locked the door, not the heavens. Allah sees you, and He will reward me.” She said this knowing she had already lost hope that he would spare her.
Alhaji did not respond. He continued, satisfying himself as he pleased, stripping her completely and pulling down her underwear. Her body trembled as he exposed himself, already prepared. Amid her cries and pain, Alhaji Mudi took away the most precious thing in a young woman’s life.
After everything was over, he personally bathed her, scrubbed her clean, and took her back to the living room. She gathered her clothes without looking at him and headed for the door, only to find it locked. He wore a jalabiya and came to open it for her, stepping out first while she followed slowly, walking with difficulty from the pain.
“Come, I’ll take you home. It’s late, and I don’t want some useless boys running into my property,” he said. She did not answer him. When she reached the gate, the guard refused to let her out since his boss was still speaking to her.
“Guard, take the car key and drive her home,” Alhaji Mudi ordered. The guard hurried to collect the key and returned to Ameera, whose heart felt shattered. “Please forgive me, Hajiya, get in; I’ll take you home,” he said. Ameera nodded weakly and moved toward the car. “Make sure you drop her at home and give her parents the food items in the boot,” Alhaji added before going back inside.
A House Full of Unknowing Smiles
Once on the road, the guard asked, “Where are we heading, Hajiya?” Ameera sighed deeply and replied, “Bagalam.” He said nothing more until he dropped her at the entrance of her family home.
Her father, Abba, who was sitting at the front of the house, quickly stood up and approached the car, smiling broadly when he saw Ameera and the guard unloading bags of food from the boot. Ameera rushed inside without responding to her father’s questions. She went straight to her room, ignoring her younger siblings who were sitting outside eating groundnuts and watching television.
Her mother, Umma, having just finished her prayers, noticed the sacks of rice and other food items being unloaded. She thanked Allah and came out to greet Abba and the guard. After everything was brought in, Abba entered happily and said, “Didn’t I tell you, Umma? When sustenance is destined, it must reach its owner. Where is Ameera?”
Umma smiled and replied, “Leave Alhaji Mudi alone; he doesn’t even like giving gifts to his relatives.” Annoyed, Abba said, “So instead of answering my question, you’re mocking my brother?” Umma frowned slightly and said, “It’s the truth. Ameera is in her room; she’s probably still angry that you sent her out without letting her finish watching her movie.”
Abba replied, “Let her be. She doesn’t know what’s good for her. What is a movie compared to food in the house? Tomorrow, even if all we have is jollof rice, we’ll still thank Allah.” Umma said nothing and continued arranging the items.
Later, in another home, Munira stood before a mirror wearing only a short pair of shorts and a crop top that revealed her navel. Her hair was loose and fluffy as she danced happily with headphones on, admiring herself like a movie star. She didn’t notice her mother until the headphones were yanked off her ears.
“Mom, let me rest today; we’ve finished exams,” she protested. Her mother shook her head. “Munira, when will you understand that you’re grown? Don’t you know the danger of staring at mirrors all the time?” Munira laughed. “I’ll stop after I get married.” Her mother frowned. “All this obsession with marriage without sense—what kind of man would marry such behavior?”
Before Munira could respond, her mother waved her hand. “Cover yourself properly. Your brother has arrived.” Munira screamed with excitement and ran to get ready.
Moments later, as the car parked, Munir stepped out eagerly, longing to see his first love—his mother. Munira rushed forward and jumped into his arms. “Ya Salam!” he exclaimed, trying to free himself as their mother smiled from the doorway.
“Let me go, you’ll hurt me with your bones,” Munir laughed as he gently put her down. She teased him about gaining weight, and he joked back, warning her that if she kept it up, their house would soon be full of suitors. Laughing and teasing each other, they joined their smiling mother and went inside together.
