A Painful Confrontation
Quickly, she stood up with a strange look on her face, completely speechless. Suhaila also stood up and said,
"Mardiyya please don’t leave, we are only looking for a solution…"
Suhaila continued, "Wallahi that’s not what I mean…"
Mardiyya cut in angrily, "So what? Am I a prostitute that he would look at me with such words? He doesn’t even have the courage to say it to my face, instead he sends someone else. Why are there so many oppressors in this world— isn’t this a test? I swear, I give up on it. A whole year feels like just a single day…"
She finished her words, fell to the ground, and burst into tears, resting her head on her knees.
Suhaila called softly, "Mardiyya…"
But before she could finish, Mardiyya lifted her head in anger and said,
"I don’t need to hear anything from you. Do you even have sense?"
Just then, the sound of the door opening was heard. They both turned quickly with tense faces.
ASIM barked, "Come on, get out of my office — did anyone tell you this is a boxing ring?"
Mardiyya looked at him quickly, but when she caught the harsh stare he gave her, she lowered her eyes immediately, grabbed her bag, and left trembling.
Suhaila followed her, also trembling, even though Asim hadn’t raised his voice — but still, his words struck them deeply.
Suhaila held her hand and whispered, "Mardiyya, people are watching us, don’t let them think something has happened…"
Wiping her tears weakly, Mardiyya said, "Please look at me, do I look like a prostitute? By Allah, I’m not dressing indecently. Just because I’m a Fulani girl from the village doesn’t mean I don’t know my own worth."
Suhaila replied, "Look, Mardiyya, he never said you should commit fornication. You know what happens in this school — how many girls end up with unwanted pregnancies? It’s not about love, it’s not about men. Look, everyone guilty is gathered here. This is just a contract marriage. You know how much Baffa has been spending on your food; if he was also paying for your registration, you wouldn’t even be able to continue school. This is your chance. Once you finish, you’ll graduate with a good certificate that can get you a job and allow you to support your parents and siblings."
Quickly, Mardiyya looked at her as if hot water had been poured on her and said, "But what about my dignity? You know that once a woman marries, her name changes, her value changes…"
Suhaila said, "Let’s go to the hostel, this is not something to be discussed here."
Mardiyya said nothing more, she just walked ahead, lost in thought. She didn’t know what to do. She hated that she had failed the exam again. What would her people say? Would they laugh at her? The education she had struggled for had collapsed.
She had only been able to pay half the registration fee, intending to pay the rest later to fix her exam, but today she missed it again. The vehicle she took broke down, and by the time she arrived, it was over. No matter how much she begged, they refused to give her another chance — she had to wait another year.
Suhaila sighed and said, "Mardiyya, you have no other option than this…"
Mardiyya asked bitterly, "So, Suhaila, you want me to accept the destiny Allah has forced on me, just so you can share it too? I don’t even understand where you are leading me."
Suhaila laughed and replied, "What destiny, Mardiyya? Wallahi, if it were me, I would accept this offer immediately. Do you know how many girls chase after him and he rejects? You’re lucky. If he didn’t love you, he wouldn’t even consider marrying you. Look at him — he’s handsome, educated, rich, from a prominent family, while you’re poor. Please, Mardiyya, accept it."
Mardiyya ignored her completely, her heart racing as she rushed into the hostel.
Suhaila quickly followed, saying, "Please stop crying. Don’t you see girls like Ajeebo? They don’t even mind carrying over courses, and still they chase after men and party all night. That doesn’t stop them from studying. Don’t you see they’re watching you?"
Mardiyya sighed heavily but said nothing, entering the reception.
Madam Sophia greeted, "Welcome, my dear…"
Mardiyya forced a smile, "Good morning, Madam Sophia."
Sophia asked, "Good morning sister, are you okay? You look unwell."
Mardiyya replied, "My head hurts."
Sophia touched her shoulder gently, "Ah, sorry. Exams are stressing you, right?"
Mardiyya only nodded, knowing in her heart that her problem was far deeper. Her parents were poor, and she understood clearly that the man’s interest wasn’t genuine love, but lust. Once he was done with her, he would discard her like trash.
Office Tensions
Madam Sophia moved away to her desk while Mardiyya sat quietly. Suhaila arrived, smiling, "Hi, my mine."
Sophia greeted, "Welcome, Suhaila. How’s sister Mardiyya feeling?"
Suhaila replied, "She’s getting better." Then she quickly left, knowing Sophia would drag her into a long chat.
Madam Grace then said, "Sister, I really like Mardiyya. Whenever I see her, my heart melts."
Sophia gave her a sharp look, "I don’t like hearing that. Mardiyya is mine."
Grace looked away and returned to typing on her laptop.
Meanwhile, in Asim’s office, Mukhtar confronted him:
"Asim, why are you acting like this? We’re just trying to find solutions. I know that girl has no issues."
Asim glared at him and said, "That’s exactly why I found her outside at eleven o’clock."
Mukhtar countered, "Come on Asim, you know how rural life is, transport problems. Besides, your mom is pressuring your wife to be checked before she travels to America. At least marry her, then later divorce if you want. It’s just a contract marriage anyway. Don’t ruin the girl’s life. This semester, government sponsorship has ended — she has to pay her own fees, but her father is broke. What do you expect her to do? Asim, if marriage was in front of her, she would have agreed already. Why do you always go after flashy ‘classic’ ladies? These local girls hold onto dignity better. She even became Muslim for you. That’s not forced conversion — that’s true faith."
Asim frowned deeply, "Are you done? Listen, these so-called hijab-wearing girls pretend to be righteous but are the worst. How can I marry a local lady? It would be humiliation for me. Look at Afiyah — she smells like perfume even when she leaves, unlike these hijab girls who stink. Mukhtar, you know I love luxury. I hate filth. Poor girls only chase wealth. I can never be satisfied with that."
Mukhtar shook his head, "You’ll never understand, Asim." He stood up to leave.
Just then, the door opened. A woman entered wearing expensive Swiss lace, a straight gown, full makeup, and perfume.
Asim welcomed her, "Afiyah, you’re welcome."
She smiled, sat down, and said, "Babe, I missed you."
He pointed at Mukhtar, "Didn’t you see him?"
She glanced sideways, "Mukhtar, how are you?"
Mukhtar simply said, "Fine," and left the office.
Afiyah pouted, "You didn’t even come to pick me up."
Asim apologized, "Sorry, I was busy. How was your trip?"
She smiled, tried to hold his hand, but he pulled away, "You know I don’t like that."
She frowned, "But we’re engaged, we should be free to do anything."
Asim said sternly, "That’s what annoys me about you. Islam gave us everything we need. This isn’t about modernity."
She argued, "But I left my religion for you. Can’t you also love the things I love?"
Asim shook his head, "I can’t disobey my Creator for you."
She sighed, "Fine, I just came to greet you. I’m heading back to school. Maybe I’ll even do my Master’s here."
Asim replied, "Do whatever you want."
She stood up, "Okay, see you later." and left.
A Secret Affair
Afiyah walked gracefully, her curvy body swaying. Her phone rang; she answered quickly, "Okay, I’m on my way, I’m still in your school compound." She ended the call and kept walking.
She reached another office, knocked, and entered. The man inside quickly locked the door, hugged her from behind, and unzipped her gown.
She smiled, turning to him lovingly, "My…"
Samuel kissed her on the chest. She giggled, helping him remove her gown, "You never let me rest."
Samuel whispered, "Why should you rest when I want to give you pleasure?"
She laughed, touching his trousers, imagining that it was Asim instead. In her heart, she wished it was his body, knowing he would have satisfied her much more.
She licked her lips like a witch, as Samuel unhooked her bra. Her breasts spilled out, and he grabbed one, saying, "I missed you so much."
She sighed heavily, "Are you sure?"
"Yes," he answered, sliding his hand into her panties.
She laughed seductively, "Samuelll…"
He laughed too, like a foreigner, "Yes, Linda."
