ABOUT THIS BOOK
Description
She nodded faintly before saying, with obvious reluctance, as though she had been forced, “May Allah preserve her,” forcing out a strained smile.
Princess Aysha said,
“Ameen.”
Then Princess Bilkisu placed the baby on the lap of Shakundum Hajara. The moment she looked at the baby, she felt her heart tighten at the child’s beauty. But she did not allow herself to reveal the secret in her heart; she only forced a smile and said,
“Masha Allah.”
After that, she said nothing more.
The room fell silent for a while. Soon, Uwani set before her a tray of fruits. As for Shakundum, she kept staring at the baby as if she was looking at her, though in truth it was not really the child she was seeing; her mind was elsewhere, filled with all sorts of thoughts.
After a while, she stood up and handed the baby back to Princess Bilkisu, saying,
“Let me be on my way. May Allah preserve her.”
With that, she headed for the door. They all wished her a safe journey as she left.
That night, His Majesty came again to check on Princess Aysha and her baby. He stayed in the room for a long time before leaving.
After four days
Inside a palace in the city of Zazzau, at about two o’clock in the night, I saw a majestic woman standing in a richly furnished room, the kind of room fit for the wives of great rulers, especially kings who possessed authority, power, dignity, and royalty.
Despite the darkness in the room, it did not stop me from seeing the woman’s face, which carried no trace of cheerfulness at all. One look at her was enough to tell that she was deeply troubled and agitated. She kept pacing back and forth, unable to sit still.
On the carpet below, I could see two of her attendants, a man and a woman. One was a guard, and the other was her chief maid and right-hand woman.
The guard raised his hand slightly, in a respectful gesture, and said, sweating because he could see that his mistress was already furious,
“May Allah help you, wallahi! Even today we were completely unable to gain access to where she is, because as you know, her quarters are always under heavy guard, and—”
“Enough!” she snapped angrily before continuing.
“Useless slave!”
Then she turned and pointed at Safara, who stood there wide-eyed with her head bowed, and said,
“And you too, Safara! You are a woman, yet you cannot even make your way into her room and do what I sent you to do. No one would even recognize you, since you too are a maid in this palace. A maid who has spent so many years in this household working for me, and yet you still do not know the secrets of this house. It is night, for goodness’ sake. Sneak in cleverly. Who would recognize you? Anyone who saw you in her quarters would simply think you were her maid, Uwani. Yet you still cannot carry out even this small task,” she said, breathing heavily with anger.
Safara lowered her head even further and replied with a trembling body and voice,
“Wallahi, Your Highness, I tried with all my effort. I looked for every possible way to get in, but it failed. And besides, you know she sleeps there together with Princess Bilkisu. You know that it is not—”
“Enough! Filthy fool!” she shouted furiously.
Then she continued,
“I do not want to hear anything from your filthy mouths. So listen carefully: I am giving you three days, until the naming ceremony. If you do not do what I said, wallahi I will have you both killed, because it is impossible for you to know my secrets and still continue living with me. And if you let yourselves be caught, wallahi I will still have you executed. Do you hear me or not?” she said in warning.
Together, they bowed their heads even lower in respect and said,
“May your heart be calmed, Your Highness. We failed this time, but in sha Allah, on the day of the naming ceremony, we will do it. Please be patient.”
They spoke as though they were about to collapse to the floor.
She clicked her tongue in annoyance and said,
“Get up and leave my presence.”
