Hauwa Kulu Part 3 by Sumayyah Abdulkadir
1. Hauwa’s Emotional Crisis
Hauwa Kulu, a blind young woman, finds herself deeply troubled by Dr. Sarham’s sudden change in behavior. Though he continues visiting their home, he no longer acknowledges her presence. She is unsure what she did to warrant his coldness, and the emotional turmoil weighs heavily on her. She tries to convince herself that Sarham was never truly interested in her, but deep down, she cannot ignore her feelings.
One day, while lost in thought, a dramatic event shakes her world—her long-lost father, Malam Bilyaminu, returns after years of mysterious disappearance. The shock causes her mother, Inna, to faint, overwhelmed by the realization that her husband is alive. As Malam Bilyaminu reunites with his family, he is devastated to learn of Hauwa’s blindness. The night is filled with emotions—joy, sorrow, and unanswered questions.
2. Malam Bilyaminu’s Story and the Past Revealed
Malam Bilyaminu narrates his past, revealing how his own brother, Zakari, tricked him into leaving Kano. Under a mysterious spell, he was forced to abandon his home, boarding a vehicle that took him to Ghana. In Ghana, he met Alhaji Munkaila, who took him under his wing and helped him rebuild his life. Over the years, Malam Bilyaminu established a successful business, but he constantly felt a pull toward Kano.
Dreams of Hauwa in distress troubled him, leading him to finally return home. He arrives just in time to see the changes that have taken place in his absence—his wife and daughter have suffered, and Hauwa has lost her eyesight. With this newfound knowledge, he decides that he will take his family to Ghana, away from the pain of Kano and Zakari’s betrayal.
However, Hauwa vehemently refuses to leave. She insists that Kano is her home, and she will not abandon it. Inna also expresses concerns about uprooting their lives. Malam Bilyaminu, however, remains firm in his decision.
3. Dr. Sarham’s Confession and the Proposal
Meanwhile, Dr. Sarham finds himself increasingly conflicted. His feelings for Hauwa, which he never fully understood before, are now undeniable. When he hears of Malam Bilyaminu’s decision to take Hauwa to Ghana, he panics. Unable to contain himself, he blurts out a shocking statement in front of Hauwa’s parents:
“What if I marry her?”
The room falls silent. Inna is completely taken aback. She had never considered the idea of Hauwa marrying Sarham, especially given his existing marriage to Madinah. However, Malam Bilyaminu sees things differently—he is immediately supportive of the proposal.
Inna, worried for Hauwa’s future, objects. She fears that Sarham is acting out of pity rather than love. She does not want her daughter to be someone’s responsibility; she wants her to be cherished. But Sarham stands his ground, insisting that he is not acting out of sympathy.
The news spreads quickly. Sarham’s parents are informed, and while his mother, Mama Mai Shari’a, is initially skeptical, she ultimately supports him. She recognizes that Sarham has always cared for Hauwa and believes the marriage is destined to happen. His father, Prof. Abbas, also approves.
4. The Wedding Arrangements and Hauwa’s Resistance
As preparations for the wedding begin, Hauwa struggles with mixed emotions. She is shocked by Sarham’s proposal and wonders if he truly loves her or if he is simply rescuing her. She also fears how Madinah, Sarham’s first wife, will react.
On the other hand, Inna is still hesitant. She worries about Hauwa’s ability to navigate married life as a blind woman, especially with a husband who already has another wife. However, Malam Bilyaminu reassures her that Hauwa deserves happiness and that she should not be denied marriage because of her disability.
Despite her initial resistance, Hauwa eventually accepts the marriage. She comes to realize that her heart has always belonged to Sarham, and she cannot imagine being with anyone else.
5. The Wedding and the Future
The wedding is a simple but joyous occasion. Hauwa officially becomes Sarham’s wife, and the couple begins their journey together. Though challenges lie ahead, Hauwa is hopeful for her future.
As she embarks on this new chapter of her life, she carries with her the strength of her experiences, the love of her family, and the unwavering support of Sarham. Her journey has been filled with trials, but she is ready to face whatever comes next.
Finally
