ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

Ten minutes after making the post, my husband called. As soon as I answered, he started shouting in a panic, asking what reason on earth possessed me to sit down and write such a lengthy, defamatory post against a prominent figure like Alhaji Tajo. He demanded to know if it meant I was blind to all his efforts, to the point where I would take matters into my own hands without his permission. I tried repeatedly to explain to him that there was nowhere in the post where I defamed the man, but that I only sent a message via social media because I believed it would make him take the matter seriously. He refused to listen to me. He kept shouting in distress, so I just hung up the phone, sat down right there, and burst into heavy tears. What on earth was I supposed to do? That day, I eventually grew tired of answering phone calls; some people were blaming me for what I did, while others believed that what I did was right, especially since my post had now spread all over social media with everyone airing their opinions on it. I was absolutely certain that the message had reached the intended recipient.
When my husband came home, we traded bitter words, all over the post I had written. He was completely furious, shouting that I had embarrassed him, and that if any trouble came of this, it would land squarely on my head because only a fool picks a fight with a wealthy man.
When his words began to cross into outright insult, I fired back. I said, "I fear no one but Allah. And his wealth will not stop me from demanding my rights. I apologized to you and you refused to accept it; whatever decision you make now does not bother me, because right now, my children's lives are my sole priority."
My words infuriated him even further. Barefaced jealousy flashed across his face. It was at that exact moment that the unthinkable happened, and he said, "Go back to your family's house, I divorce you with a single pronouncement of divorce, since no one is important enough to speak to you for you to listen."
I fell into a state of utter shock and madness. My mouth began to tremble as I tried to apologize to him, but he stormed out of the room in a rush. I was left repeating Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un [To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return]. Once my heart calmed down a bit, I stood up and began packing my clothes into a suitcase. I didn't leave immediately; I waited until Yusi returned from school.
Our father was not overly harsh with me. He told me to clean up a room and stay there until the dust settled. Baba Sule came over in the evening and started raining insults on me, saying I had brought trouble upon myself and that I was already facing the consequences now that Alhaji Muntari had divorced me. He warned that whatever aftermath followed that post would end up destroying me.
I am utterly amazed by how seriously they have taken this matter. So, keeping quiet was what everyone wanted? Just because the man has money, everything he does is deemed right? I did not insult him, nor did I speak ill of him; I only came out to speak as a mother. And that is what is causing all this chaos. Even now, I am not intimidated, nor have I entertained the thought that the man will triumph over me.
