The Chaos in Kofar Mata Neighborhood
In the Kofar Mata neighborhood, on the outskirts of Kano city, Hadarine met her at the east side of town. The place was shrouded in darkness, and the wind was blowing fiercely. Despite the danger, the matriarch and her followers, with their usual pride, approached him. Dinana was sitting quietly on the ground, focused on writing.
She adjusted her waist, turned to Dinana, and said, “Dinana, are you always busy with writing whenever you enter this house? What is that paper for?”
He laughed, lifting the paper filled with handwriting, and said, “Mother Shagalallu, this letter is for the daughter of the honorable household. She wrote to me yesterday in English. Look here,” he pulled a paper from his pocket. “I am responding in Chinese since I know that if I write in your language, you won’t understand this English. Honestly, this English is too difficult for you.”
They all laughed, but the matriarch frowned. She stared at Dinana and said, “Dinana, take this paper out of the house. Your actions are disrespectful. Why must your behavior drag me into trouble?”
Dinana noticed her attempt to burn the paper and calmly said, “Alright, girl, you’re in trouble, the paper is trying to burn….” He glanced at her sharply and added, “I am always with you. Half of what you try won’t harm me, so stop wasting your energy.”
Suddenly, a young man from the Daudo clan appeared. Kahu Bulama raised his hand, signaling him to stop, and said, “Go back where you came from! I won’t allow this nonsense in this house.”
He hung his bag, adjusted his stance, and said, “Kahu, where are you? Honestly, I’m going to correct you in front of the matriarch. I was sent here by Ka to handle this matter properly.”
Kahu moved closer and said, “Auzubillahi, why are we facing so much misfortune? A woman is trying to harm me. Innalillahi, matriarch!”
The matriarch fussed over adjusting her long robe, chewing gum while watching the situation. She finally spoke sharply: “Mind your own business. This concerns Kahuna, not you. Business came to me in this neighborhood; there are people everywhere, but she got through. Kahu, you must maintain your dignity. You always argue with those who come to disturb the peace.”
Kahu responded, “Alright, matriarch, I just want this paper. Continue your calculations. When we return to Maiduguri, after everything settles, I’ll pay you. I forgot to bring it when we fled this town. I’ll sell it here if you don’t get your share.”
She looked at him quickly and said, “Kahu…”
“Yes, matriarch, may God guide you.”
Kahu adjusted his cap and said, “Matriarch of the shameless, I greet you.”
Tensions Rise
The matriarch replied firmly in Hausa, “Before you finish, Kahu, help me with this.”
Kahu, frustrated, thought about the chaos caused by the matriarch. He had long dealt with such disturbances, and this house was the twelfth he had visited. The matriarch’s antics never ended; she paid for everything, but the commotion continued endlessly.
Another woman, resembling a troublesome aunt, appeared and said: “Look at the matriarch’s children. Enemies attacked you, yet you refuse to recognize them. You’ve spent thousands, but now it’s time to go.”
Dinana’s head shook in disbelief. The woman insisted, “Finish your claim before you pay. Don’t say that I don’t provide the paper for debts.”
The matriarch’s cloak fell over her shoulder, and she added: “You stubborn heart, sitting there, arguing with a woman? You’ll only lose to her eventually.”
Dinana laughed and said, “Wealth comes to those who know how to handle it. You’ve borrowed too much already.”
The woman glared and said, “Uhmm, your disrespect is shocking. You even looked at me as if I would lend you money. Never!”
She stood up and continued, “Now, the chaotic world is upon us. Don’t blame the elderly, blame the disorder itself.”
Discord and Showdown
Before anyone could respond, they were interrupted by a sudden commotion. The servant carrying a half-empty bottle began dancing, chanting:
“Come, the big one rises. Your rise is inevitable; nothing separates you in today’s world.”
The matriarch, annoyed, said, “Follow me, and I’ll continue giving updates daily.”
The scene was chaotic, with insults, disputes, and threats flying between the matriarch, Kahu, Dinana, and the other women. Everyone was involved in an endless power struggle, highlighting the tension, pride, and conflict that dominated the Kofar Mata neighborhood.
