Arrival at the Airport
At exactly 12:09 a.m., we arrived at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Airport in Katsina. The car my mother was driving was a Mercedes 3400. We drove into the airport just as we heard the roaring sound of Azman’s aircraft preparing to land. It was clear we wouldn’t have to wait long—Daddy would be arriving soon. I smiled widely, and Ammi joined me, saying,
“We came at just the right time. My beloved is about to arrive,”
she said, her smile widening as she parked the car properly in the parking space.
I quickly opened the car door and stepped out, lifting my head to watch the plane as it descended in a way that completely captured my attention. I raised my hand to shield my eyes from the light so I could watch the plane’s graceful movement as it landed, just so I could later tell my siblings everything I had seen.
Ammi kept glancing between me and the aircraft that carried her beloved, filled with joy and excitement. The plane continued descending, moving fast as though it wouldn’t land, until it finally lowered its wheels, which I saw clearly as they touched the ground. The wings flapped as it slowed, and then a vehicle carrying the staircase approached so passengers could disembark.
Waiting for Daddy
I grabbed Ammi’s hand, urging her to come quickly. She followed, though she didn’t seem to be in much of a hurry, so I let go and ran ahead. I wanted to be the first to reach Daddy when he stepped out—to throw myself into his arms, hug him tightly, and welcome him home. He would lift me high into the air and toss me playfully.
I truly loved Daddy more than Ammi, because he always indulged me. Whatever I wanted, he wanted too. He played with me, laughed with me, and whenever I told him my worries, he comforted me. Ammi, on the other hand, paid more attention to my brothers—especially my elder brother Abdullahi and my younger brother Sulaiman. Daddy always gave me special attention. What I didn’t know then was that this would be the first taste of destiny I would experience—one that would touch my tongue, my eyes, and my heart through my beloved father.
We stood there waiting for the plane door to open so I could lock eyes with Daddy and run into his arms, to feel the warmth of the father I longed for more than anything.
The Shocking Discovery
The plane door finally opened. The first person I saw stepping out was Daddy’s friend. His face carried no softness. Then another man came out behind him, followed by several unfamiliar faces. They were carrying something that looked like a hospital stretcher. On it lay something wrapped in white cloth… like a body.
My chest tightened painfully. I felt a sharp ache in my head. I turned to look at Ammi, who ran forward and uncovered the face of the person lying on the stretcher.
Whose face did I see?
It was my Daddy’s—motionless, without any sign of movement or breath.
Before I could even ask Daddy’s friend, Alhaji Mustafa, what was happening to my father, I heard my mother cry out. It was a sound that came from her in a voice I could hardly believe was hers…
