ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

The Stormy Night and Falmata’s Struggles

The wind began to blow, signaling that rain was about to fall. Gradually, the rain started pouring until it became very heavy.

She had already finished everything she had to do and was now sitting at the edge of the bed, pressing her legs together. According to her habit, once the cold air from rainfall began to blow, no matter how well she covered herself, she would still feel chills. Along with it came an intense, uncontrollable desire.

This was happening again. She wrapped her body tightly, curled into a ball, and covered herself with their large soft blanket, but it was useless—the feeling only grew stronger. Even though she had a husband, she was enduring this unbearable pain, which made her burst into tears. She wept bitterly, but realizing that her tears would not help, she rose weakly and went to the small bedside drawer.

She pulled out a small bottle, opened it, and revealed several tiny tablets—red and white. Without hesitation, she poured some into her mouth, swallowed them, shut her eyes tightly, and shook her head. Not long after, heavy sleep overcame her without warning.

Zahra’s Concern for Her Friend

“Do you know I love you, Mustapha? I love you more than anything. Whatever you say you want, I will never deny you. My only wish is that you agree to our marriage. Wallahi, even if your family refuses, I will agree that you hire witnesses to make our marriage official.”

He caressed her face, then joined his lips with hers, and they drowned in the world of lust. But whenever she brought up marriage to Mustapha, he would remain silent. Everyone around him had also refused to support the union. He knew he was only brought to Jos for work.

— May Allah protect us and our faith from committing zina (fornication) and other sinful acts. Ameen.

“Salamu Alaikum! Salamu Alaikum!! Salamu Alaikum!!! Could it be that Falmata is not home today?” Zahra entered the house after hearing no response. She walked into the bedroom, and from the way Falmata lay, she could tell her sleep was not normal.

She opened the fridge, took out a bottle of cold water, and gently sprinkled some on her friend’s face. With a long sigh, Falmata opened her eyes slowly and gazed at Zahra.

Zahra frowned and asked, “Falmata, haven’t you stopped taking those tablets? Do you want to kill yourself or ruin your life?”

Falmata gave a painful smile as she sat up, holding her head, which throbbed especially from the sudden awakening. After a deep breath, she replied, “Zahra, you will never understand my problem. Allah knows I’m in deep pain. Imagine having a husband, yet he’s absent in every way. I’m suffering. The tablets I take are not drugs that intoxicate; they only help me manage my emotions and force me to sleep. Since Allah destined me with a heartless man, I have no other choice.”

Tears rolled down her cheeks as she continued, “Zahra, your life with Abban Amira amazes me. You have no problems, your husband is close, and he is not a sinner.”

“Shhh, Falmata,” Zahra interrupted, “stop insulting your husband. Be patient. Every married woman faces trials. Even if some claim they have none, they are lying—each woman’s troubles only differ in intensity. And you cannot be certain he is unfaithful. His work took him to Jos.”

Falmata scoffed, “Zahra, you think he can stay away from me for a whole month without seeing another woman?”

“You too have faults, Falmata. Just support him.”

“No, Zahra, I can’t stand his absence. Anyway, I’ve slept enough. Let me pray, freshen up, and then we’ll go to your house since Abban Amira is around.”

“Yes, hurry. We’ll also have breakfast there.”

“Thank you, my blessed friend.”

They laughed together. Falmata went to the bathroom while Zahra cleaned the room and then returned to the sitting room to wait for her.

Mustapha’s Departure and the Growing Distance

Mustapha and Falmata were cousins from a village in Yola. Their parents had died during a violent clash between farmers and herders. They survived only because they escaped together. By Allah’s will, they met Abbas and his father, who sheltered them. Over time, they became like family. Eventually, Mustapha married Falmata, while Abbas married Zahra.

Mustapha was a talented designer, while Abbas was a businessman. Life went well, until Mustapha began traveling abroad frequently. Each time, he invited Falmata to join him, but she always refused. She hated leaving Abuja, especially the thought of moving to Jos, a place she deeply despised.

One day, he sat at the edge of the bed and said, “My wife, I’ve secured a contract in Jos. I may live there for months, even years. But my mind will be at peace if you are by my side.”

She turned with a frown. “We’ve discussed this before. Why bring it up again? I don’t know anyone there. Here I have Zahra and others. If anything happens, I’ll have people around. In Jos, I’ll be alone.”

“Falmata, are you married to them or to me? You know your health challenges worsen during cold rainy seasons. What if your condition worsens and I’m not there? That’s why I want you to come with me.”

“I said no, Mustapha! I won’t go. Even if you’re gone two months, I’ll manage. That cursed city is colder and wetter than here. If I follow you there, I’ll die. Leave me here and pray for my protection.”

“Fine. Whenever you change your mind, you know the way.” He dragged his suitcase out angrily and left without greeting Abbas and Zahra.

Falmata muttered, “Go to Jos if you want. Don’t expect me to follow. Foolish man.” Then she lay down until sleep overtook her.

Meanwhile, Mustapha arrived safely in Jos. The company welcomed him warmly, gave him a furnished house, and offered him a long-term contract. The house was beautiful, surrounded by lush gardens, with guards and staff. Yet, his thoughts remained with Falmata. He loved her deeply, more than she realized, but her refusal to join him filled him with bitterness.

He considered calling her, but his pride stopped him. That night, he dreamt of her constantly.

The next morning, he forgot to call. After meetings, he went to a restaurant. A strange woman noticed him and tried to flirt, but he ignored her. When he finished eating and went to pay, he discovered she had already settled his bill. She had even picked up his business card, which contained his home address. Smiling mysteriously, she kept it.

Back in Abuja, Falmata noticed Mustapha hadn’t called all day. Her heart sank. She wept, convinced he was deliberately ignoring her. The next night, Mustapha finally remembered and saw her missed calls. As he reached for the phone to call her back, the lights in his room flickered on—and to his shock, the same mysterious woman from the restaurant was now in his bedroom, dressed only in a short skirt…
