After the Final Meeting
“Hustle until you no longer need to introduce yourself. Push yourself, because no one else is going to do it for you.”
Those were his final words to the group of wealthy investors he had just concluded a meeting with—people interested in buying shares in his new company, which had only seven days left before its grand opening. His words captured everyone’s attention in the room, and with them, the meeting came to an end.
As he said goodbye, more than half of his attention was on his phone, which he had noticed lighting up for a while. When the place had almost emptied, leaving only him and four of his guards—who had accompanied him on this trip and were standing at a distance—he calmly reached for his phone, exhaling a warm breath. With every movement, he felt a deep sense of satisfaction at how smoothly the preparations for opening the company were going, with all the signs of success and promise shining before him. He had never been this invested in anything before and couldn’t explain why all his thoughts and focus had converged on seeing this dream come true.
He hadn’t had a full two hours of rest lately; only at night would he force himself to lie down for a few hours. Every minute that passed mattered to him. Even before now, he had always been someone who respected time and valued it greatly.
A Call from Farouq
The moment he saw the name Farouq on his screen, he adjusted his posture and murmured, “Ya salam.”
A faint smile tugged at his lips—one of those rare, almost magical smiles that few people ever got to see. There was a certain mystery in it that added to his aura and revealed the natural handsomeness God had blessed him with. He knew Farouq would probably start with complaints. After all, he had promised to call him countless times and hadn’t even kept track. He couldn’t even remember the last time they spoke.
“Don’t you have anything more important in your life than your business?” Farouq began.
He let out a hidden smile and stretched his long legs onto the elegant table in front of him. They had a deep bond and understanding that allowed them to sense each other’s moods even without seeing each other’s faces. He knew he would hear even more complaints—Farouq’s voice already sounded tense, as if his face showed signs of frustration.
“If you remove you and my family,” he replied calmly, “then yes—there’s nothing more important than this business in my entire life.”
“And where have you placed your marriage to that girl in all this?” Farouq shot back directly, pushing him further.
“Marriage?… Girl?” he repeated, genuinely seeking clarity.
“Yes!” Farouq said briefly, already irritated at the thought that he might have forgotten about the wedding ahead.
“Oh… right,” Fu’ad muttered with a small smile. Only then did memories of what he had left behind in Nigeria start to return. The whole matter had nearly slipped from his mind because everything else he was focused on had taken over his thoughts.
“I’m sorry… you know how it is—”
“—The habits of a possessed man,” Farouq cut in sharply. “But Alhamdulillah, this time we’ve overpowered whatever was trying to interfere. God willing, my brother will not die unmarried.”
Fu’ad burst into laughter at how seriously Farouq spoke. He couldn’t understand why everyone was so concerned about this marriage. Still, he realized they were genuinely happy for him and taking it very seriously—all of them, including Maamah, though he still had a big question mark about her. After all, he knew she never acted without a reason.
“Check your email. I’ve sent you something—look at it urgently.”
“Alright,” he replied, and they both hung up.
Plans and Responsibilities
He knew he might forget if he didn’t check immediately, so he opened his email right away. Ignoring other new messages, he went straight to Farouq’s. One by one, he scrolled through the photos Farouq had sent. They were pictures of high-end ready-made men’s clothing from a well-known luxury fashion brand—clothes worn only by the extremely wealthy.
The outfits looked good to him, but he didn’t know what he was supposed to do with them. Without taking his eyes off the images, he picked up his phone and called Farouq.
“I’m coming,” Farouq said immediately, sounding like he was speaking to others nearby.
“Have you seen it?”
Fu’ad closed his eyes briefly, then opened them. “Yes, I have… but I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with them. Are you already preparing to open a garment company for me?”
Farouq felt a surge of frustration. Was this man truly forgetting he was about to get married? He had handed everything over to him without asking questions or showing concern.
“I swear, if you were here right now… have you forgotten the girl you’re marrying—the one you already paid the bride price for? Did you lose your memory or what?”
Fu’ad laughed again. “Calm down, dude… is it really that serious?”
“It’s even more serious than that,” Farouq snapped.
“Alright, I’m sorry,” he said calmly. “But you know I have many important things in front of me. You’re my representative everywhere. Whatever needs to be done, just do it. I’ve given you full authority.”
The silence that followed—and the way Farouq exhaled—told him his anger had eased. They rarely stayed mad at each other for long. Farouq just needed to vent, while Fu’ad tended to ignore things until they piled up.
“Talk to Abdulghafar,” Farouq finally said. “For now, they should relax the tight security around the girl.”
“For what reason?” Fu’ad asked, straightening in his seat.
“I think she should be allowed some freedom,” Farouq replied. “Of course, she still needs security given the state of the country. And now she’s part of us. Anyone connected to our name must be protected.”
