The Arrival of Prince Sauban
Five black luxurious cars were lined up, moving along a smooth tarred road, the hum of their engines rising as they drove on. These were security vehicles escorting Prince Sauban to ensure his safety.
They arrived at a magnificent palace, richly decorated with royal ornaments on its walls, so that anyone who saw it would know immediately that it belonged to royalty. Guards stood watch at the palace gate, each dressed in a blue uniform with a red stripe, about twenty of them stationed, each attending to his own duty.
As soon as they heard the sound of the approaching convoy, they quickly stood upright in respect, their bodies trembling with anticipation. They opened the gate, their faces beaming with smiles of joy as they waved happily at the cars. When the vehicles had all passed through, they closed the gate and rushed in behind, singing praises and chanting the name of Prince Sauban.
Music and drumming filled the royal compound, so that every living being within knew that Prince Sauban had returned to his motherland.
The head of the royal household hurried into the palace and knelt before His Majesty, King Abdullah, delivering the joyful news that the Prince had arrived safely. The King smiled, shaking his head, and anyone who looked at him would see that his face radiated happiness—his most beloved son had returned home safe.
The courtiers echoed the head servant’s words: “The King is delighted with this good news, your reward is assured.”
Bowing low, the servant gave thanks, prayed for long life and health for the King, and then hurried to the Queen’s quarters to deliver the same glad tidings.
Meanwhile, attendants surrounded the Prince’s vehicle. For five minutes they circled in caution, before opening the door. By custom, Prince Sauban never rushed out of a vehicle immediately—it was his habit to wait several minutes before stepping out, for security reasons.
The first thing to emerge was his elegant, well-polished shoe. The sight alone revealed sophistication. He stepped out with royal composure—tall, fair-skinned, strongly built, with a perfectly shaped beard that lay neatly upon his face. His high nose, large eyes, and fine features were enhanced by a calm smile. Truly, he was the picture of nobility.
This was Sauban, the son of King Abdullah.
The courtyard resounded with music, chants, and praises. Courtiers, servants, and maidens alike knelt before him, offering greetings with the utmost respect. Sauban waved gently and smiled, for he was a man who honored others, never belittling those beneath him. This kindness made his people love him deeply, almost as if he were already king. They escorted him all the way to his chambers.
Jealousy and Punishment
Meanwhile, in the Queen’s section of the palace, a servant girl rushed in, breathless, knelt before her mistress, and announced:
"Long live the Queen, may Allah increase your life and health. I bring wonderful news—your noble husband, the gallant Prince, has returned from England. I saw him with my own eyes, he is heading to his chambers right now. All the music and drumming you hear is in his honor."
But the Queen, a young woman of about twenty-five, exploded in rage. Shouting, she said:
"Shut up! Close your filthy mouth, you ugly wretch! Today you will face severe punishment. How dare you kneel before me and describe my husband’s beauty with such passion? That means whenever you see him, you follow him with your eyes, admiring him from head to toe! Did you forget that I do not share my Prince with anyone? Did you forget that I ordered none of you should dare look at his footsteps, let alone his clothing?"
She pointed toward a desolate field behind her quarters, overgrown with mango, guava, and neem trees, a place no one visited because of the insects and crawling creatures there.
"There! That is where you will spend seven days. No food, no water. And if I find even a single fallen leaf not picked up by you, your punishment will double."
The servant girl bowed trembling, pleading forgiveness but with no choice, she went weeping toward the dreaded place, knowing it meant near-certain death.
Sauban’s Return to the Palace
Reaching his own quarters, Prince Sauban dismissed his attendants with a wave. They bowed, showering him with praises and blessings, before departing. Alone, he entered his chamber, immaculately arranged as always by his trusted servants.
He sighed deeply, lay on his grand bed with its fine sheets, and whispered “Alhamdulillah.” He rubbed his beard, licked his lower lip, closed his eyes, and drifted into thoughts of his past, his life abroad in England, and the reasons for his return.
After a long pause, he rose, removed his clothes, and refreshed himself with a bath. Emerging with a towel, he dried his hair and body, preparing to dress before visiting his father, the King.
Suddenly, the door opened without a knock. A familiar perfume filled the air—his wife Saudat. His heart sank in irritation, for she had entered without greeting, a habit he despised. He had almost forgotten she existed, for he loathed her manner and her arrogance.
She stood, arms crossed over her chest, devouring him with her eyes in admiration. Yet the Prince ignored her completely, continuing with his preparations.
She smiled, blocking his path:
"My warrior, will you pretend not to see me? I came here for you. Have you forgotten that I am your wife by sunnah? You left me for a year without a word, though you know I love you and miss you desperately."
But Sauban cast her only a stern glance and walked past, frowning, unwilling to exchange words. He left for the King’s palace to pay homage.
At that very moment, the head of the household knelt before the Queen (the King’s Fulani wife), announcing joyfully:
"Long live the Queen, may Allah bless you with health and long life. I bring you good news: your son, Prince Sauban, has returned safely from England. He is within the palace now, resting."
The Queen, who had been listening to music, immediately straightened, her face tightening with jealousy. Turning sharply to the servant, she asked in a commanding voice:
"Tell me—what did you see of him?"
The servant smiled respectfully and replied:
"Your Highness, the Prince has grown fairer, stronger, fuller in stature, and more handsome than ever. From his face, it is clear he is in peace and joy."
