ABOUT THIS BOOK
Description
He was walking along the side of the road with his phone held up to his right ear. Just a single look at his expression was enough to tell he was deeply upset, indicating that whatever was being said on the call was far from pleasant. He spoke calmly, yet he was intensely furious at the man's sheer audacity. How could the man hire him for a job with the promise of payment within two days, only to still owe him money nearly five months later? To make matters worse, the man had been paying him in tiny installments, rendering the money virtually useless for any meaningful project since it wasn’t given as a lump sum.
Overwhelmed by frustration, he let out a soft sigh and tried to speak, but what happened next left him unable to discern where in the world he was. He suddenly felt lifted upward; his eyes caught a glimpse of the open sky as his brain went temporarily blank. He couldn't comprehend what was happening to him at all. Before he could regain his senses or process a thought, he crashed down onto something hard. His head slammed against the hood of a car before he slid down to the ground.
His vision grew blurry. He tried frantically to open his eyes to figure out what was happening, but instead of opening, his eyelids grew heavier and shut completely. The only thing echoing in his ears was the sound of loud music. Then, his eyes closed, and he completely lost consciousness.
Inside the car sat a young man who, at a glance, was clearly a wealthy, fashionable guy who thought very highly of himself.
"Goddamn it! This bastard is gonna make me late," the driver snapped, slamming his hand against the steering wheel.
He stepped on the brakes and turned down the music blasting inside the car. Without even turning off the engine, he stepped out furiously to inspect the front of his vehicle. Seeing that it hadn't sustained any damage, he got back inside, put the car in reverse, and maneuvered around the young man lying helpless on the asphalt—who looked completely lifeless. He slammed on the accelerator and sped away from the scene, grumbling:
"It’s all Daddy’s fault for dragging us into this. Of all places, he chose to build a house right in the middle of poor people's neighborhoods just to protect his political image. Now look at what it's caused us—mingling with the children of paupers who know nothing but uncouth behavior."
Commentary & Narrative Breakdown
Stark Class Contrast: The excerpt paints a vivid picture of social inequality. You have a hardworking main character struggling to survive off delayed, piecemeal payments for his labor, suddenly collided with a privileged, arrogant antagonist who views human life as nothing more than a potential inconvenience to his schedule.
Atmospheric Pacing: The transition from the protagonist's mundane financial frustration to the sudden, disorienting impact of the car hit is executed smoothly. The sensory details—the sky flash, the temporary brain blackout, the fading vision, and the muffling car music—create a visceral sense of trauma.
Characterization & Tone: The driver’s dialogue and internal monologue quickly establish him as an unsympathetic villain. His immediate concern for his car’s condition over a person's life, paired with his elitist disdain for the neighborhood and its residents ("mingling with the children of paupers"), sets up an engaging high-stakes conflict common in Hausa contemporary drama.
