Saif Gets Ready
He stood in front of a large dressing mirror, wearing a black suit while adjusting his necktie.
Give me freedom, give me fire, give me reason, take me higher… see the champions take the field now… you define us, make us feel proud…
He hummed along softly with the song. I saw him pick up a pear-shaped watch and wear it after spraying himself with The Real Man perfume. He stood still, admiring himself in the mirror, and I also stopped to admire him.
Tall, very fair, with a long nose, big beautiful eyes, and dimples at the corners of his mouth.
He smiled when he saw how perfect the suit looked on him, as if it was tailored just for him. After applying some blue oil on his hair, he walked toward another corner of the room.
There was nothing much there except a row of shoes. He picked a pair of half-cover shoes and wore them.
After checking himself once more in the mirror, he headed to his mother’s section of the house.
News, Conversations, and Trouble
He entered with a greeting. Safiya replied.
After sitting, he asked, “Where is Momi?”
“She’s in the room, taking her bath.”
“Okay.”
He reached for a book on the center table titled The Broken Heart.
Nasir walked in holding a newspaper.
“Man, have you read the news?”
Saif shook his head. “No, what happened?”
Nasir handed him the paper. “A minister’s daughter attempted to take her own life.”
“Wow, where?”
“In Nigeria,” Nasir replied.
“So what happened to her?”
“That’s what I also want to know. Even we journalists don’t have full details yet.”
Saif read a bit and said,
“She’s the daughter of the petroleum minister, Dr. Salamatu Abubuwa Yola. And she’s her only child.”
Safiya held her mouth in shock.
“But she died, right?”
“No, she didn’t die—just in critical condition,” Saif replied.
Safiya hissed. “Honestly I wish she died. Maybe the enjoyment was too much.”
Nasir frowned. “Come on, she’s her mother’s only child. Don’t say that. Her mother is in shock right now.”
Safiya folded her arms.
“Look, I think she misbehaved too much. Why attempt suicide?”
“You don’t know her reason,” Nasir said.
“There’s no reason good enough. She’s just tired of life or not mentally stable,” Safiya insisted.
Saif stood up. “Allah ya kyauta. Safiya, if Momi comes out, tell her I went to Dad’s part.”
She nodded, and he left.
Hospital Visit, Minal’s Breakdown, and Saif’s Reaction
Alhaji Bashir Bature, Saif’s father, lay on his luxurious bed listening to the radio. Saif greeted him and sat beside him.
They talked about Saif’s wife, and Dad advised him to be patient and reconcile with her. Saif agreed.
Then Dad said,
“When you leave here, go to Dr. Salamatu’s house. Find out how her daughter is doing. She attempted suicide.”
Saif left immediately.
At Dr. Salamatu’s house, he was told she was at Kings Hospital, so he rushed there.
In the hospital, he found Dr. Salamatu crying with some women around her.
“Mr. President asked me to check on your daughter. Did she survive?”
Still crying, she nodded. “Yes, but I don’t know her condition. They haven’t allowed me in since yesterday.”
Two hours later, doctors allowed her to enter.
Inside, Minal sat wearing light clothes, her eyes pale and her lips dry, looking filled with hatred for herself.
When her mother entered, Minal said coldly,
“Please leave, Mum. I don’t want to see you anymore.”
Dr. Salamatu tried to explain, tried to reach her, but Minal shouted:
“I hate you! Don’t come near me!”
Saif entered and asked about Minal’s condition.
Suddenly, Minal screamed at her mother again,
“Why did you save me?! Why didn’t you let me die?”
Dr. Salamatu whispered tearfully,
“Because I’m your mother…”
“No you’re not!” Minal shouted.
Saif, overwhelmed by her harsh words, slapped her before she finished her sentence.
Everyone froze.
Minal grabbed her cheek, shocked.
Dr. Salamatu held her mouth in fright.
Minal angrily responded,
“Who the hell do you think you are to put your filthy hands on me?!”
Saif shot back,
“Quiet, you silly, stupid girl! How dare you talk to your mother like that? You don’t know the value of parents—maybe you’re just not alright!”
Dr. Salamatu tried to stop them.
Saif eventually walked out, furious.
Outside, Dr. Salamatu later came out too. Saif asked,
“Why does your daughter hate you this much? Why did she attempt suicide?”
She sighed deeply and said,
“Tell Mr. President thank you for his concern. Tell him she is stable. And greet him on my behalf.”
She walked away without another word.
Saif shrugged and left as well.
