The Struggle for a Better Life
In a small Nigerian town, a poor mother named Mama Lami struggled daily to raise her son, Lami. They lived in a small mud house and barely had enough to eat. Despite their hardship, Mama Lami raised her son with strong moral values, love, and faith in God. She made sure he went to school, even if it meant she worked long hours doing menial jobs.
Lami, a bright and obedient boy, grew up watching his mother sacrifice everything for him. Her biggest dream was to see him succeed and live a life far from the suffering they knew.
A Leap of Faith
Lami eventually gained admission to a university. It was a joyous moment, but it came with another challenge—money. His mother sold her only valuable possession, a goat, to pay the admission fee. With teary eyes, she gave him her blessing and sent him off, trusting that God would take care of him.
At university, Lami worked hard. He avoided distractions and focused on his studies. He also worked part-time jobs to support himself. Despite the distance, he never forgot his mother, regularly sending small gifts or money when he could.
The Promise Fulfilled
Years passed, and Lami graduated with honors. His performance impressed a foreign NGO, which offered him a job abroad. Though it meant leaving Nigeria and his mother behind, he took the opportunity with one goal—to change their lives forever.
He excelled in his career, and soon, success followed. He bought a big house, expensive clothes, and a new car. But as his wealth grew, his connection to home began to fade. Calls to his mother became rare. He sent money occasionally but never visited.
A Painful Visit
One day, an old neighbor who had traveled abroad came to visit Mama Lami and was shocked to see her living in poverty. When he returned, he confronted Lami.
"How can you forget your mother like this?" the man asked.
Embarrassed, Lami quickly arranged a visit. He arrived in a convoy, dressed in foreign clothes, wearing sunglasses. But when he reached home, he was ashamed of the poor environment. He stayed in a hotel instead of his mother's house and spent only a few minutes with her.
The visit broke Mama Lami’s heart. She felt abandoned and unrecognized by the child she had given everything to.
A Mysterious Dream
That night, Lami had a strange dream. He saw his mother being chased by wild animals. He tried to save her, but she disappeared. Suddenly, he was surrounded by darkness, and a voice said, “Your mother is your light. Without her, you are lost.”
He woke up trembling. For the first time in years, he cried like a child.
The Return
Haunted by the dream, Lami decided to return home again—this time with sincerity. But it was too late. His mother had fallen seriously ill and was admitted to a local hospital.
He rushed there and met her lying weak and pale. She smiled faintly. “My son, you’ve come,” she whispered.
He held her hand and cried, “Mama, please forgive me. I was blind.”
With tears in her eyes, she nodded. “You were never lost, just distracted. I prayed for you every day.”
A few days later, Mama Lami passed away.
A Lesson Learned
Lami buried her with honor. He renovated her house, built a health center in her name, and started a foundation to support single mothers. He realized too late that no success, no amount of money, or fame could ever replace the warmth of a mother’s love.
He told his story to young people: “Do not let success make you forget those who sacrificed for you. Appreciate your parents while they are still alive.”
