The Restless Night
"Night is the servant's place of rest," so say the wise speakers of Hausa.
It is a time when minds put themselves at ease, silence replaces noise, tranquility replaces restlessness, and rest replaces exhaustion. This is true for almost everyone, because once night falls, no servant has any desire other than to lay down their sides in peace and rest.
It was a compound containing numerous rooms. It seemed the people of the house had not yet gone to sleep, because in every room, you could spot a lamp or a candle lit, and muffled voices could be heard rising, as though it weren't deep into the night.
She was lying down in one of the rooms of the house, positioned flat on her back, staring at the cracked ceiling that bordered the top of their room. In reality, if you looked at her, she seemed to be staring at the ceiling, but the truth was, her mind was not on it at all. If she were to be asked what it was at that moment, she might not even be able to give an answer right away.
For the third time, she turned again to look at them to make sure they were asleep, as she could even hear the faint sound of their snoring rising softly.
Slowly, her body felt weak and was trembling in a strange way. With a heavy and aching heart, she sat up, her eyes welling up with tears, though she knew herself that the tears would not even fall.
She stood up, her eyes still fixed on them. She had no one but them, and she loved them deeply in her heart. Just as she had no one but them, they, too, had no one but her on their part, which was why she was certain they would miss her—even though she was the cause of the calamity they were thrown into. She knew for sure they would fall into a difficult situation if she left them, yet she knew that doing this, both for her and for them, was the right thing. It was better for her to leave so they would feel the pain of her departure for just a few days, after which she knew they would continue to live a good life—unlike if she stayed with them, which she was certain would only make everything worse for them.
Indeed, she herself agreed and accepted the name everyone called her now: 'Plague'. She felt there was no benefit in continuing to live among them. In fact, not just them, she saw no use in staying within society at all, bringing upon them heap after heap of calamity!
Therefore, she turned slowly, walking in a manner that had now become second nature to her—no longer the energetic and lively person she used to be. She began to walk like someone with no strength left in her body, while her frame shook violently. In this state, she headed for the door to exit the room, her heart reassuring her: 'Indeed, what you have planned to do is the right thing!!!'
There was no one in the middle of the compound, as it was now approaching twelve midnight. But aside from the people she had left sleeping in the room due to the injections given to them, no one else in the entire house was even preparing to sleep. The reason for their late night was connected to the grief they were in, while those who were insincere sat around pretending, hiding their true hypocrisy.
The Desperate Choice
She let her gaze wander across the rooms. Despite how many there were, she could not beat her chest and point to a single one where she hadn't caused the occupants grief, hardship, and misery.
Slowly, she turned and looked back at their own room. For the first time since this fateful week began, she felt tears slip down from her eyes—because when tragedy peaks, weeping usually abandons the eyes and vanishes. Immediately, a feeling crept over her that she might not be able to go through with what she had planned. Fearing the hesitation that a part of her heart was trying to force upon her, she hurried past and headed toward the massive well located far in the corner of the compound.
Upon reaching it, she reached out and slowly pulled back the heavy wooden plank covering the well, moving quietly so no one would hear her. She wanted them to discover her corpse inside only when morning came and they realized what happened; or, if they didn't realize it, let her rot inside while they eventually grew tired of searching for her and gave up.
Just looking at the well alone was enough to strike terror into anyone because of its sheer size and depth. For her, however, it was completely different; she didn't feel even a single drop of fear, because the life she was living right now was far more suffocating! More painful! And far lonelier...
