Description
I froze in my tracks, feeling a strange sensation rushing through my head, as he slowly stepped up in front of me. "Lunah!" Tears trickled down my face as I looked at him with an intensity only I could truly feel. "Lunah!" I raised my head to look at him. "Are you not going to stop this crying?" I stared blankly at him; what kind of consolation was this that sounded so much like a command? Ya Hafiz’s voice interrupted my thoughts. "Luluna, listen to me!" Wiping away my tears, I turned to face him, though my eyes were still brimming with tears. The way I locked eyes with him made him lose his words. "What is it? I said, what is it? What have I done to you that you keep pursuing me like this? What is between us other than family ties? Tell me, what of yours do I have that I haven't returned? Is there a child between us? Hafiz, what did I do to you that you won't leave me alone?" The sheer force in my voice made him step back; this was not his Lubabatu—by Allah, she had completely changed. Before he could even finish processing this, I said to him, "If you don't get out of my life..." He collapsed onto his knees, pleading, "Please, cover my faults, I swear by Allah I regret my actions!" He even grabbed my leg, begging me to cover up his secrets, saying I was the only one he needed. Speechless, I wrenched my leg away to leave, but he quickly grabbed me again. I didn't even realize how he got thrown aside until I noticed Mr. Turaki standing in front of me, glaring fiercely at him. "She said she doesn't want you, how dare you touch her." Outraged, Hafiz charged toward Mr. Turaki, prompting me to quickly scream, "I swear to Allah, if you two fight like children again, I will..." I ran out of words. "Are you trying to kill me?" "Didn't you see how he hit me? Or is it because I don't have money like him that you let him beat me? Am I not your relative? Even if there is no marriage in this world, I am still your relative. Why should he be beating me over you? Yes, I deserve to be hit, but for God's sake, if it weren't for you or Adamu and their lot, wouldn't you feel hurt if a stranger beat me? I know I made a huge mistake, but you should still treat me with justice, especially since I know our parents still want to see us together to this day." I fell silent, his words piercing deep into my soul. I couldn't bring myself to look at Mr. Turaki even as Malam Jamil and the others came outside. I turned to go back into the house. "Lu...!" I stopped him by saying, "Please," as I raised my hand. He opened his eyes wide, locking his gaze with mine despite my attempts to look away, until he succeeded in catching my eyes. "What do you mean by 'Please'?" he asked, the resonance of his voice and his commanding presence overwhelming me. "You haven't answered me?" I quickly left the spot; I couldn't look him in the eye and tell him to stop beating Hafiz, but at the same time, it wasn't right for him to keep beating Hafiz—Hafiz wasn't a child to be thrashed like a donkey. I headed straight to Yadiko's room, lay down, and continued to cry. Hafiz went straight into Abba's parlor and burst into tears, begging them to have mercy on him. I could hear Yadiko's voice raining curses on him, swearing at his parents, and even threatening that if he didn't leave the house, she would pour hot water on him.
