ABOUT THIS BOOK

Description

She was sitting in a very lavishly decorated parlor — so richly appointed that at a glance you could tell money had been spent; there was nothing missing inside. If you looked at her you would see rest and comfort working on her face, but if you looked with discerning eyes you would notice there was also worry with her. She was reasonably beautiful — you wouldn’t call her ugly — though her skin wasn’t very fair; you might even call her chocolate-colored. Especially now, with the sense of ease and comfort settled around her, her beauty showed more. Her mouth was small, her lips pleasing to look at. Her eyes were straight and steady; her hair, though not very long, was fine—Allah be praised. Still, the signs of worry were written all over her heart.

Right now she sat on a two-seater, wearing a pink skirt and a soft cap. She gave a deep sigh, then looked up at the room clock — it was 12:30 pm. But through that old night, her husband had been so taken up with his work that he didn’t seem to know how important his job really was; he didn’t even see his own shortcomings, and he didn’t have time for his family. He put his work above her happiness. She sat there with worry, loneliness, and sorrow; it wasn’t about anything else — it was because of my husband’s work. Her heart began to feel a sharp pain; her head started to spin thinking he wanted to harm her because of his work. She stood and wiped away some hot tears that wanted to fall. The TV in the room was on, but she thought it was just background noise because she wasn’t paying attention. She stood and switched it off, then cut the bedroom light and shut the parlour door and closed her bedroom door. But then — what? — as soon as she entered the room she heard the TV speaking and saw light, even though she knew she had switched it off. She froze and turned around, convinced she had turned off the TV. Or was the worry about my husband’s work making me lose my mind? She had no answer. So she went back and tried to switch everything off again; she turned to close her bedroom door — and heard the TV again. This time she became frightened because she was sure she had switched the TV off. She looked and checked, but she couldn’t see anything. With trembling fear she went to unplug the sockets and switched off the room light. Quickly she went into the bedroom, but as she stepped inside she heard the TV sound again. Terrified, she looked and saw the socket on the floor — but the plug wasn’t in it. She turned her eyes to the TV, and it was on.

Then panic began to rise; she couldn’t see clearly. She watched the TV and the people on it had their faces wrapped in shrouds; they began to circle around someone in the center — not sitting, not standing — but the figure was enormous. His whole body seemed to be smoke, like fire smoke. That was what he was like. There were other shapes, too, but they had no legs like humans — some had different faces, which would convince you that these were not people but jinn. Then, as if reverting to their natural forms, they all focused on her even though their faces were still covered. Their hands rose and they aimed toward where she sat, and they started to come out of the TV. Yet at that moment he was still sitting there — he didn’t move, didn’t look up. She was in terrible fear and panic. Quickly she tried to close the door, but astonishingly, the thing in front of her — this smoky figure — let out a terrible cry that shook the whole house. She collapsed to the floor.
