A Woman Deep in Thought
She sat at the doorway of her room, resting her chin on her hand, lost in deep thought. She was alone in the house, carefully thinking and analyzing things by herself. Her husband had left early in the morning to his workplace, where he worked loading and unloading goods from large trucks.
It was only when he returned that they would cook whatever they had to eat for the day. This had been the difficult life she and her family were living.
As she sat there thinking, she finally made a decision. She felt it would be better to gather her household furniture and sell it so that she could at least buy an old refrigerator. With it, she could start selling cold drinks or chilled items and perhaps earn a little money for herself.
A Discussion With Her Husband
When her husband returned home, she did not hesitate to tell him about the decision she had made.
He remained silent for a moment and leaned back where he was sitting on his mat, enjoying the breeze. Then he said:
“Halima, I’m not saying your idea is wrong. But in my opinion, you should be patient and keep your belongings. The times we are living in are difficult for everyone—both the rich and the poor. Everyone is struggling in this era.
Even if you sell your furniture to start a business, I can assure you that life may not allow you to regain what you lost. Later, regret and loss might follow.
So just keep your things. As long as Allah has not deprived us of something to eat in our lives, then Alhamdulillah. What we need now is patience, because not everyone gets what they want.”
The woman sighed and replied, “Honestly, I have already made up my mind. Just allow me to sell them so I can at least reduce our difficulties in some way.”
He realized she would not accept his advice or endure the hardship of their poverty patiently, so he allowed her to do as she wished.
He thought to himself that it was no longer only city women who resisted their husbands’ authority; even village women were beginning to do the same because of how times had changed.
Starting a Small Business
The next morning, while her husband was away, she called a furniture broker and sold her household items. The broker came and took them away for a small amount of money.
She quickly gathered the money and waited for her husband to return so she could inform him that she would go and buy the item she intended to purchase.
He did not object, because he knew the money was hers. He allowed her to do as she pleased, not wanting to seem as though he expected something from her money.
After the Maghrib prayer, she got ready and went to the house of a dealer who sold second-hand items. Fortunately, she found three refrigerators there that had just been brought from the market. After bargaining, she bought a fairly large one that was not too old with the money she had.
As they left the place, she hired someone to carry the refrigerator to her home. Her heart was filled with happiness.
When her husband returned, he prayed for her success and progress in what she had started.
From that time on, she began running her small business using the refrigerator, selling cold items and earning a little money for herself. This helped ease some of the everyday financial difficulties she had been facing, since she now had some personal income to support her needs.
