ABOUT THIS BOOK
Description
I kept quiet, looking away as if she wasn't talking to me. Seeing that I had no intention of answering her, she went back to her seat, sat down heavily, and stammered. There was nothing on her mind except the millions she had been promised, but I was determined to completely frustrate her.
"I must expose her true colors in the restroom, I swear she doesn't deserve to get away with losing such a huge amount of money." That's what she said in her heart, then she began trying to relax her face so I wouldn't think she intended to harm me.
"Hajiya, I'll be heading back, since I see the birthday celebration is over. May Allah grant you many blessed years." As I finished saying this, I handed her the gift I had brought for her, which I had wrapped in a plastic bag. Without waiting to listen to the thanks she was about to give, I headed toward the exit of the event. The sound of her sharp heels clicking loudly on the polished tiles that covered the floor of the venue confirmed to me that she was following behind me.
I didn't look back until I reached my car. What surprised me was seeing about six women besides Hajiya Danasha arrive at where my car was parked.
"Baby, are you leaving just like that?"
A Hajiya who was dripping with wealth from head to toe threw this question at me. I looked her up and down before I said,
"Yes," so quietly that I don't think she heard the answer I gave her.
"You all know this visit of hers has been a very lucky break for me, so don't worry. Slowly, friendship will endure between us, insha Allah."
Hajiya Danasha gave them this additional explanation, looking into my eyes. I didn't look at her. I opened my car, got in, and tried to start the car.
Quickly, the Hajiya opened the passenger door and placed a large bag inside, saying,
"Aysha, greet everyone at home. Thank you very much."
I only gave a slight smile, then said,
"Same here."
As I finished saying that, I pulled my car away and left the place, cursing the likes of Hajiya Danasha and her friends in my heart. Even while on the road, I stopped and returned the bag the Hajiya had given me without even checking what had been put inside it.
I arrived home at 11:15 at night. As I entered the living room, I saw that everyone let out a sigh of relief, and they released the tension they had been holding. A laugh burst out of me, and then I said,
"Who died in our house?"
Baba Jummala gave a half-hearted smile and said,
"Alhamdulillah, since you've returned home safely, I hope nothing happened to you?" I moved close to her and massaged her feet, smiling as I said,
"Nothing happened to me, Baba, and among all of them, none tried to harm me. I went safely and returned safely with the help of the prayers you always make for me. So all of you, rest your minds."
With that, they relaxed, and we continued with a different conversation.
"Danasha, what exactly happened between you and her?"
"Hmmm! You better leave her alone, I swear that girl is more stubborn than you can imagine."
"But did you spell out the millions in money she would get for her?"
"Very clearly. The problem is the girl herself is not poor. If you see the kind of cars she drives and how she spends dollars, you'd be certain of that."
"But still, she's trying to frustrate me. As for me, I had already planned how I would take her to my house in Abuja for the weekend. I swear I was more drawn to her than you can imagine."
"Just let it go, Kumatu. I swear, since the day I first met her at Mr. Biggs, I've been overcome with intense desire for her. I even dream of her when I'm sleeping. But no matter how I've tried to get her attention, she refuses me. And what will surprise you is that in her life, she despises MEN. That's why at first I thought I wouldn't have trouble persuading her, but lately when I pressured her, I had to resort to using a shameless, heavy-handed approach."
"Don't worry, Danasha. She's not the first extremely stubborn girl we've encountered, and she won't be the last. Just give us her name and her car plate number, and we'll take care of her for you."
